Is it crazy to backup 1200+ DVDs?

My cousin is thinking of backing up all his DVDs and he has around 1200 :Q I told him it would take forever and it will be a waste of time. It'll probably take 1,5 hours per DVD to deep analyze it and back it up.

90 minutes x 1200 = 1800 hours :Q = 75 full days :Q

I told him to just signup for Netflix and if he ever scratchs one, he can just rent it and make a copy of it (since he owns the DVD anyways).

I don't know how the Dual Layer burners work but I assume you still need to compress by removing extras, still image menus, etc.

What would you do? Vote.

If it's a DL burner why on earth would you need to remove or compress anything?

And is he talking HD backup also, cause if he is :Q

do you deep analyze? if you don't yeah, that's what it takes but deep analyzing improves image quality.

hmmm. he doesn't have to compress with DL burner? Well, I guess it would still take him 30 days instead of the original 75 days :p

Is it really worth it that much? I never deep analyze and I haven't seen any problems with quality so far.

For that many DVDs it might be worth getting a Dual Layer stand alone replicator. Prolly be handy for the future if he purchases a lot of dvds.

DL discs are almost as expensive as the regular movie... given the chances of scratching being ~1 in 30 he is losing money using DL discs. of course, 1 in 30 is an observed rate based on my CDs, which get used a lot more than DVDs, so it is probably lower than that.

I wouldn't say he's THAT crazy. It could just be an ongoing thing. Start with the movies that he watches a lot, do a couple a week.

Of course, he could also build a dedicated rig for like 400 bucks just to do burning.

EDIT: Or he could be like me. I'm considering upgrading my HTPC to have 3x 200gb's and just having all my dvd's ripped into it. Faster loads and everything. Just gotta convince the lady to let me spend the mula.

EDIT2: He needs a lot of HD space for 1200+ though...

well it will probably take him a year to back them up (unless he quits his job & divorces, etc. :p) so DL disc prices may go down till he gets serious about it.

With 1200+ Dvd's he should only backup the out of print /exotic ones. And if he scratches one of the others where it becomes unplayable, he probably could re-buy it on half.com for a couple of bucks.

It would be more cost effecient to wait like a year for media to be dirt cheap.

Or get a bunch of HDDs for cheap/free after MIR and set up a massive disk array.

Massive being the key word. Even if they were all ~5GB apiece, we're talking 1200x5GB = 6TB of storage. :Q

Why would he want to back up all his DVDs anyway? I'd just back up whatever movie I watch the most. Not to mention it will take a lot of time and money to accomplish something like that.

I'd suggest multiple computers that have multiple burners going on at the same time.

Is it worth backing up? All that money and time invested into it? If he scratches one, why not rebuy it?

Out of print / Rare ones backed up are reasonable but for others?

Your pal is nuts for having that many DVDs in the first place! At a generous $10 per DVD, that's $12,000, which is like 50 years (600 months) of Netflix. Much cheaper to not buy so many. :D

Anyway, backing up like that is idiotic. What's he going to do, store them offsite in case of a fire? WTF?
