Is it better to leave monitor on/off when turning computer off?

What do you all think? When you turn off your computer for the night...If you leave your monitor on, there's still 'power' going through your monitor. But then again, if you turn it off for the night, it isn't good to flip the power switch on/off frequently.

NovaTone, I don't know what the best route is, but for eas of use, when I power down my computer, my monitor goes into a stand-by mode, to conserve energy. I've only used the power swith on my monitor once, to turn it on when I bought it. If your monitor has a stand-by mode when you turn off your monitor, use it, in my opinion it's the easiest way to go. Hope this helps.

I turn off my monitor when i am not using it,even when the computer is in,when i am away i turn the monitor off.

A monitor is the most expensive part of a system (19") that's why when i am not using it i turn it OFF.

I never had any problems with my monitors,I always turn it off when i am not using it.Why keep it on?

It takes 1 sec to flip the switch before you get up,the most power eating component of most computers are monitors.

When it's OFF it uses 0 power, in stand by it uses some depending on monitors.

OFF= less wear & tear on it, the way i see it.

Saving power is one thing, but isn't it true that it's not good to always turn your monitor on and off? Every time you do so, you're abruptly cutting off the power to the monitor. In the end, that might be more dangerous than worrying about saving power.

I do have a stand-by mode for my monitor as do most monitors out there today, and I'll probably use that more now.

It depends on your use. If you shut your monitor on and off every 5 minutes, then you might be doing more harm than good. But if you are only talking about shutting it off once a day - you'd be an idiot to keep it running. Monitors are designed to handle many thousand power ons/offs. At once a day, you'd have to keep your monitor for at least a decade before you reach that limit. By then who cares if the power switch starts failing - you desperately need a new monitor.

Many monitors/TVs run full power in 'standby' except they display only black (everything else is still running). A simple check is if it uses something called 'instant on technology'. That means if you turn on the monitor/TV the picture will show up in a second or two. Monitors/TVs require hot parts to run. Thus a cold start may take up to a minute to display a picture as the parts heat up (this is especially noticible on older TVs). In fact monitors never reach their full potential until they have been on for up to 30 minutes as the parts continue to heat up. Instant on technology keeps the parts hot - everything runs except the electron tube. Heat is a major reason that things fail. If given the choice of having my monitor hot for 8 hours while I sleep or using a function that it was designed to use - I'd always choose the latter.
