Speed, maybe not....reliability, probably.
why would a PCI network card be any slower?
That's not what I meant -- I meant a usb connection might be just as fast, but not as reliable. I'm assuming he doesn't have a >11mbit connection ;)

USB = 400kbps
NIC = 10/100 Mbps

Go figure. Unless your modem is slower than the 400kbps, go with the NIC.

USB = 400kbps right?? :D

network card all the way, i used to hook it up USB but the connection would always stop and i would have to restart 3 times a day. Connected it to an internal NIC and no problems. I have a wireless ethernet card hooked up USB to three computers in adhoc mode and it works great.

USB = 12MBit.. It could transfer faster then a 10MBit network card...

USB would be fine for cable/DSL connections..

But if your thinking of connecting to a LAN in the future, might as well invest in a PCI 10/100 NIC..

Not sure what the price of a USB nic or a 10/100 is right now..

my cable modem displays the current incomming bit on a little LCD, which I then have to manually input into the computer. Beat that! :)

You can get a 10/100 for $7 or so (new) with some careful shopping. So price shouldn't be a factor.

Definitely go with a PCI NIC and not USB.

It will depend on the speed of your computer. On a slower computer USB may not be as reliable. If you got the fastest P4 out there with 1 GB of RDram then I don't think it will be an issue.

I've used both usb and nic with my motorola sb4100. I see no difference. The usb is easier and reliability is great.
