I had a Scoshe CD visor that held 11 cds and kept my CDs in it until I came back one afternoon and the outer rim of every CD that was exposed had melted. As a result, on those 11 CDs the outer tracks are not unplayable and are unrippable. So yes, part of the CD can melt. Also, I once did a test on a Depeche Mode CD to see how much abuse a CD can take, I cooked it in a microwave until a large 1" bubble formed on one corner of the CD and then dunked it in a cold water and then hit it with a hammer and tried to bend it and amazingle the CD could still play some tracks. Not very many, but it did play the first few tracks....
