Cool so infection aside, we don't really have to worry about any solids that are non-toxic getting into our skins?

Or what would be an example of a non-toxic solid that would affect everything under the epidermal layer?

Infections are pretty serious, and I certainly wouldn't take one in my face lightly. Go see a doctor.

Since no one here is a medical expert, I think the best thing to do would be to go see your doctor. If this was a work related thing I would think your employer would cover any cost associated.

<Mr. Safety>Wear eye protection when working with machinery. This piece hit the OP's face. A couple inches over and it would have hit his eye. If the OP was wearing eye protection at the time, atta boy to him.</Mr. Safety>

Yes, yes I do wear safety glasses every day, sometimes in the shower.

That must be part of the early Dharma Initiative. I wonder if that's Desmond as a boy.

My eye doctor did in fact use a magnet to remove a steel sliver from my eye. You can still see a rusty colored spot where it was.

Didn't look anything like that pic though.

What kind of steel are we talking about? Do you know the alloy composition (or brand name)?

Depending on the alloy in question, it could be no problem at all. Indeed, many medical devices are formed from engineered steel, titanium, etc. (e.g., hip joint replacements, plates, nails, etc.). If the alloy you were working with has a high heavy metal content, however, you probably want to get it removed.

No problem, however you won't be able to ever get an MRI. The little piece of metal will get hot and burn you from the inside out.

I have a blue ink dot in my right wrist from Alan Hart stabbing me in 7th grade.

I have a blue *graphite* dot on my right index finger from when [name] stabbed me by doing a quick full-body spin in the 1st grade.

Why? I've had my head in an MRI machine and I have metal dental work.

Steel has iron in it which is a ferrous metal attracted to a magnet.

Tooth fillings ( some contain metal some do not ) are non-ferrous and are not attracted to a magnet.

Seems half and half as to whether I should see a doc or not. I was indeed wearing eye protection, but not a full face sheild because normally for this machine you dont need it. Just happened to have a perfect storm of things to cause it to break and hit me.

After opening the wound a few times it seems Ive drained all the black fluid, I think blood might have been pooling in the wound. But it bleeds normal now. I do indeed have a purple "blister" on my face though, definately a chunk of metal there, I can kinda push it around. hurts though, as does opening the wound. I tried to remove the peice by heating up a razor and cutting at it, but it seems like its in there good (I did try a magnet, but best I got is a 15lb lift one). Meh I think Ill leave it for now, I dont think its causing an infection. No idea what kind of steel it is, I dont think its stainless...its super hard (its suposed to cut other steel).

If this was an on-the-job injury and you
a) didn't report it promptly
b) didn't see a doctor

you may be screwed for claiming this as a work comp injury.

Sadly, the work comp system is so fucked up by a combination of fraud and insurance company lawyers, that you have to report the slightest scratch or sliver immediately if you want to be covered in case it gets infected and you need medical treatment. In many states, you have to report an injury within 24 hours or you are refused work comp treatment.

Are you trying to live up to the latter half of your user name? :p

Thats why I was asking here, I didnt report the injury at work. Not only is the system screwed up but its a major pain in the rear here. You have to go through an interview process and a bunch of other junk on top of the fact that Ive already got a bad image at work. I would be looking at a suspension which at the time didnt seem worth it for a scratch. It was bleeding a good ammount and I just couldnt tell there was anything in there, and like I said I still didnt know untill it had healed most of the way. Thats when I realized there was still a good sized funny colored lump. I was trying to figure out if it was worth spending my own money to get it checked out...but from the responses it sounds like Ill live. I really REALLY dont have the money, 90% of my pay goes towards rent and I usually cant afford food (GO MULTIVITAMINS!).

I don't know what state you're in nor your company policies, but it's not uncommon for people to be fired for failing to report OTJ injuries. It's usually also a violation of policy rules to use personal insurance for OTJ injuries.

It was bugging the heck out of me so I finally decided to pull it out. Froze my face for a while and went after it with a good sharp razor blade. Holy hell it was allot bigger than I thought (and there was a smaller peice)...ehhhahh it gives me the shivers when I think about it.

Was so nasty pulling it out, I kept hearing the metal on metal scraping noise trying to pick it out. Was bleeding everywhere and couldnt grab it so I just jabbed the razor in real fast and gave it a flick and the big peice shot out with a good chunk of skin and a bunch of nasty crap poured out behind it including a smaller peice of metal that was back there.

Yahhhehhh that hurt!

Sometimes shit stays in there for ages. I'll make you cringe:

1. I had a piece of pencil 'lead' stuck in my palm for ages. If you ran your finger on it, you can feel the solid bulge. I clearly remember in grade school messing around with friends, then my friend stabbed me with it. 10 years later, the bulge is gone. 18 years later today, it's all gone but you can still see a faint blue colored spot.

2. I don't know why but I was circumcised when I was 10. I was playing with my dick the other day, then I felt smell hard grain inside the pulled back skin flab. I didn't know what it was, so I started grinding my finger tips on it rigidly (not sexual). It was slightly painful, but addictive like picking a scab. A couple days later, something came out.

It was an 18 year old piece of stitching that made its way to surface through the very small needled hole...

Man, the stuff I share online...
