Can anyone explain to me why I should partition my 100 gig hard drive? I am running Windows XP.
How do you format it if its not partitioned? You need at least one...Thats why.
if it's a boot drive, people partition into 2, 1 for OS just in case you have to reformat fubar
LOL, there's no reason to format just to install/reinstall an OS.

I have an 80Gb partition and have it partitioned just because i likehaving the OS on one drive (and must have programs), and the rest for data, games, mp3, college work, and other programs and apps. I do this purely to help myself organise where everything is on the hard drive. The C: drive is rarely altered after the inital install of the OS and must have apps (namely Office). The D: partiton is constantly having data added and deleted.

I could use one partition but i choose not too, i just like having things set out like this. It may not work for you, but thats up to you :)

However you set it up, work out a good system for ordering everything on your computer and stick to it, then you will never go wrong. ;)

pfft .. i don't like it. a reinstall doesn't clean up bloat and left over files from an install.

I just prefer to organize things into partitions. OS, Programs, Data files, Network share, secondary os.

only if you like losing everything at once if something happens to your drive.. if you have a virus or something and the drive has to be wiped. you will lose it all.. i'd probably have 3 or 4 partitions on a drive that size....

Formatting the OS/program partition is MUCH MUCH faster than a "deltree C:\windows" and "deltree C:\Progra~1".

It is not bad to have a single partition.

Defrag time is not a good reason for multiple partitions.

Separate partitions are overrated for "saving data" . . . the likelyhood of a corrupted FAT table hosing your system so the data is unrecoverable is relatively rare . . . you are more likely to have HD failure and lose everything anyway . . . reqular backups are far more important then "false confidence" in separate partitions on a single HD.

Having multiple or a single partition is PURELY a matter of "style" . . . no real advantages one way or another (and don't say "organization" - because 1 well organized partition is better then 3 disorganized ones).
