Is it bad to have a subwoofer a few inches from your computer case?

My room is so cramped that I dont have much other choice without getting uber creative. I have a 2 foot wide (maybe 2.5') spot for both my computer and my subwoofer. Lets say the subwoofer is 6 inches away from the case. Is that gonna be bad?

Shouldn't be a problem. If you had a powerful sub next to a CRT monitor or something, then you can run into problems, but afaik there's nothing in a computer case that's going to be effected by the magnetic field of the sub at the intensity we're talking about (unless you have some incredibly powerful sub).

If you had a powerful sub next to a CRT monitor or something, then you can run into problems, but afaik there's nothing in a computer case that's going to be effected by the magnetic field of the sub at the intensity we're talking about (unless you have some incredibly powerful sub).

Speakers that are designed for home use (either compoent for sound systems) or computer use are designed with magnetic sheilding properties... a properlly made consumer use speaker for the computer or home entertainment should be able to be placed right next to a screen or a computer and cause no issues at all.

I new most sattelites were shield, didnt know about subs.

whenever I place my subwoofer about 4ft away from my CRT monitor it flips out and I have to degauss it 🙁

Your computer should be fine.

I know if I had my SVS PC Ultra next to my PC it would damage it 🙁, but as everyone said a normal sub should have no effect. My SVS can hit Dolby reference level at 20hz without even sweating.
Sub placement near a corner in your room is ideal as the bass has more effect.
 
For what it's worth just be sure that if you are working with magnetically shielded speakers, to know that they are definitely magnetically shielded. My CRT freaked out with Klipsch ProMedia 4.1s and they swore to me up and down that they were magnetically shielded... I don't know what the heck could have happened, just my $0.02
 
hm, though everyone seems to agree in that there wont be any problems i doubt somehow. like the one guy said, if the sub isnt shielded well - and this is often depending on the price/quality - then the electromagnetic field stuff, and sub woovers do have rather strong magnets, well it can indeed harm the hdd, since hdd`s dont like electromagnetic radiation. So, if u start having any problems with ur harddisks and data loss, remember my words...😉
 
It could make the CD drive skip if you turn up the volume really loud, that used to happen to me a bit. Not a big concern though since most media is played off the hard drive.

Hehe, that happens to me a lot. 250 watt sub cranked makes my cds skip. Before I switched to an LCD screen the bass made my CRT wobble but not from any magnetism, just the bass rattling the monitor. In my case I would think my sub if it was placed near my pc case, may cause some damage jut because it would probably shake the hell out of the case!
