I have heard that it's best to exercise every OTHER day. Is there any harm in exercising everyday?

Depends what type of exercising and how intense.

Jogging and leisure biking can be done every day, for example.

Weight lifting is best done either every other day, or targeting different muscle groups each day. Upper body on day 1, lower body on day 2, that sort of thing.

you don't want to exercise the same muscle groups 2 days in a row to give them time to rebuild. That is why you alternate days with different exercises.

It's better than NOT exercising at all.

Just don't weight lift everyday on the same muscle group.

I don't know...I seem to hear about health nuts (the kind that have a strict diet and jog everyday) suddenly dying from cancer and other such complications at a young age. Not sure why that is.

Well thankfully you backed up such an outrageous claim with sufficient evidence, right?

Well it's not like I saved the newspaper clippings. I know of one guy in this town who developed cancer in his early 40's (huge health nut)...and when it happened everyone was bringing up these other guys who were also health nuts that died young too.

This is hardly an "outrageous" claim. I've heard it discussed on the radio before as well. You guys are probably frantically googling it and thinking "IF ITS NOT ON TEH INTERNET ITS NOT TRUE!!!".

Most cancers are caused by enviormental factors. So your post is retarded. He didnt die because he was a health nut.

There's some harm,

considering that you can have muscle fatigue if you don't rest the same muscle group,
stress fractures on bones,
instances of low blood sugar since all of them are in [EDIT]glycogen form to support muscle activity,
etc.

Bad stuff happens to good people. Normal body weight, eating right, and excecising all reduce the risk of disease.

They don't eliminate it.

your thinking of glycogen, and that can be replenished fairly quickly after a run

Cancer was just one of the instances I heard about...and who knows what caused it.

I'm not saying excercise everyday is bad...but I believe there is something to be said about moderation being best for all. Jogging for 3 hours every day is going to have some negative factors somewhere.

yeah don't do it dude. Too risky.

In other news, I'm planning on making the 2008 Olympics with a 3X/week jogging-around-the-block program.

Yes, this is why my doctor told me I have 2 weeks to live. If only I had taken a day off each week! WHY!?!? Why did I run every single day? Oh, the anguish of it all!

...

Ok, as mentioned, the risks are stress fractures, overexertion of muscle groups and other "acute" injuries. You hear about the health nuts dying of cancer because it's such a big deal; being that everyone thinks that being healthy should make you completely immune to disease.

Close but not quite.

Actually your body will adapt to any type of exercise you do. But over-training or working out past certain thresholds in your body is not good.

If you jog or bike ride everyday, that is great, but you don't want to push yourself to a point of physical exhaustion every single day, where your body has no time to recover.
Same goes with weight lifting. You could lift weights everyday at 50-70% your max weight everyday for a few sets, but if you push yourself past a certain threshold, it has adverse affects.

Basically listen to your body. It will tell you if you aren't doing things correctly.

no, it sharpens the mind also. obesity is a growing concern in the United States. obviously bootcamp training is only the beginning for many soldiers serving in the armed forces. staying in shape is another thing.

eating right is another thing. but they all tie in together and overlap in boundaries of how you want to portray yourself as far as how much you actually care about yourself.
