Is it bad to eat dietary supplements?

I take different types of dietary supplement since I want to be healthy. I try to eat right but its hard to get all the vitamins. SO I take green tea extract, Vitamin E, and other vitimins pills daily. Is this bad?

It wont do any harm if you are taking them in moderation, but there are some studies to suggest it might not be beneficial.

On the other hand, many supplements have like 300-400% of your daily value for a given nutrient. I think this would be bad for you if taken over many years.

Instead of taking many different pills, why not find a multivitamin like centrum that will give you ~80% of your daily intake of about 20-30 different vitamins and minerals?

Just like that? Take a Centrum everyday to get 80% of your daily nutrients? That sounds way too easy.

just take a centrum. its a suppliment meaning it accounts for normal eating so theres no risk of overdosing on certain vitamins or whatever. some people are into taking mega doses..thats just useless and waste of money

Exactly... there are many studies that say vitamin supplements dont really work, so if you are going to take them, at least take them in a dose that wont be toxic over the long run.

The problem with "Daily Values" is that it assumes that will all get absorbed. When you take vitamins, not all the vitamins will get picked\absorbed into your system. So you have to take too much, in order to get enough.

Just make sure you drink plenty of water and there will be no long term side effects.

A good multivitamin should be able for the things you don't get enough of in your regular diet. BW86's plan sounds pretty good. Most americans don't get enough omega 3. I believe you are supposed to have a 1:1 ratio of omega 6: omega 3 (don't quote me on that) but Americans have somewhere around 20:1.
