Is it bad that I run my Athlon Xp 1800+ at 100%

alfa147x

Lifer
I have a computer with an old Athlon Xp 1800+ that i run almost 24 hours either for Folding at Home or converting video, and running as a file server on a giga network with 3 other computer attached and 2 wireless.

1.53 GHz and 256 MB ram

Am i doing a bad thing for the CPU? I have been doing this for about 2 months running at an average of 65% but now its been 100% for about 2 weeks , how much life should I expect of the CPU?

Its not that bad of a jump because if it were killing my bill my parents would start trying to figure out what going on; if it jumped nay more then 10-15$

Your HDD will give out long before your CPU does. Just make sure that the fan is unobstructed by dust, etc. IIRC, those Athlons cannot throttle down if they start to overheat.

I go every 2 -3 weeks and vacuum, compressed air my desktops so it should be clean

Athlon XP can shut down if it detects that it is overheating, but no it cannot downclock at all.

Ah, your parents are paying the bill so you don't care. I see.

They do care and the see the increased is justified in being able to access all their files from the office\store\ any were they get cell phone reception....

How much Bad can someone does if he would abuse a piece of Silicone valued at about $20 😉

Like: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck would chuck wood.

Nothing wrong with running a CPU at 100% all of the time. I might even consider it bad if you're NOT running 100% all of the time. (DC is the bomb)

It doesn't take 100% CPU utilization to provide that though.

1700+ @2.4ghz with air cooling for nearly 4 years now. Not under constant 100% load, but I've worked the hell out of it over the years!

He is doing more than that.....it is all clearly stated in the OP.....

Or are you just trying to be annoying??

lets put it this way... you are probably reducing the life of your CPU from 100 years to 50.... Every other component on the system will break first... and you can buy a replacement CPU for that kind of board on ebay for under 10$

Just stating the facts. If you consider that annoying then don't post anything or take it to PM.

I have a Pentium D 820 that I have been running at 100% 24X7 for the past 1 year (of course i do occasionally reboot) and it has never showed any errors. SpeedFan shows CPU temperature at about 70-75c . Is there anything wrong in running a CPU at 70C 24X7 at 100% usage?

Your not stating any facts. In the op he says:

i run almost 24 hours either for Folding at Home or converting video, and running as a file server on a giga network with 3 other computer attached and 2 wireless

Not to mention how antagonistic your first three post are.

I have nothing I need to PM you....

Focus on the OP's question, instead of what ever your agenda is.

You're pretty presumptuous to think I'm trying to antagonize him. You don't know me, don't pretend to. Again, if you are going to continue to spam and be OT about this then take it to PM. Otherwise I could care less about your lack of understanding of my posts.
