Is it at all possible to install NetWare5 onto a laptop? Bypass nic hardware detection?

I tried installing it to my Inspiron 8100 and I can't get pass the network card installation, as the install actually goes to verify/detect the hardware that I've chosen driver for 🙁 So I get stuck at that point and get kicked out of the install.

I've seen it on my teacher's laptop before, so I'm assuming there's a way to bypass that?

That was what I was going to ask 🙂

My laptop is my testbed. I use it to install various OSes so I can tinker around with them and get to know it better. People look at me silly when I have W2K Server on my laptop. They ask the exact same type of question you did, no worries, you're not being rude, you're just being curious george 🙂

Yeah, runs fine on a laptop. Since Novell works primarily from RAM (cache), the difference in performance between Novell and, say WIN2K server is even greater on the laptop (since most laptops are kind of I/O bound and the disks are slow).

As long as the NIC you're trying to use has Novell Server drivers, it should work fine. Somewhere along in the installation process you should be able to skip the usual detection and manually install the NIC (kinda like the F6 message when loading NT/2K).

You might want to try an Intel NIC / PCcard. I think their unified drivers work across the line, and their Novell drivers are very stable.

Hopefully, your laptop has a bunch of RAM innit.....not critical, but very helpful.

Good Luck

Scottmac, is there any specific model of PC card you can recommend? Yeah, I've noticed how slow it ran at school when we only had P2-400 desktops with only 64mb of ram. Thx for the info btw.
