Didn't they cover this in second grade people?

Older then you - proper title, unless stated otherwise.

You are all adults. Use the first name.

Being an 'adult' doesn't mean you can't show someone who is teaching you something respect and courtesy.

my problem with this, is the professor i have this year, ive known since i was two and have always called him by his first name.

now, i caught myself the one time i almost did call him by his first name in front of the class, but that was embarassing enough.

Depends on the professor and situation. Showing respect by using the title rarely has any negative consequences. Calling them by their first name could very well piss some people off in certain situations. My advice: use the title until they tell you otherwise.

Has nothing to do with tenure. Many non-tenured professors have the title assistant or associate professor.

Address them as they address themselves on the first day or on the Syllabus.

When in doubt "Professor <Last Name>", Sir, or Ma'am, will do better than most salutations.

As a general rule, no. Most professors have a pet peeve about not being addressed by title. I hate it, and correct people if they use my title.

Otherwise use the proper title

professors wasted their lives becoming profs.... so they hold it dearly to their pathetic lives.

Wasted our lives? How do you figure? I adamantly disagree that we have pathetic lives. In fact, I posit that we have more fulfilling lives than the general public as we are doing exactly what we love to do and have plenty of free time to pursue ventures that enrich our lives even further.

He's probably just pissed because he's having a rough time in college and is wrongfully putting the blame on the profs rather than himself.

LoL. In one of my classes, when people raised their hands and said Professor or used his last name, he would stop and say "try again" because he wanted people to call him by his first name. but then again that was just one class. We never found out how to even say his last name because he only introduced his first name and how it's cool if read backwards, and that his last name was freaking hard and that we should never even bother because people from his own country oculdn't pronounce it right.

Everywhere else we call them professor + last name.

I swear kids these days have a negative amount of decorum.
He/she paid their dues to get where they are, at least show them a little respect. You will never catch me dead referring to my major profs by their first names, even among friends.
And don't get me started about the college students' piss poor e-mail correspondence. It might just as well be :

>>Hey you,
>>
>>I don't what's wrong with this. You solve this sh*t.

Address him as Doctor Befuddlefog unless he tells you to call him by 1st name.

Aside from "appropriateness," there?s also a subtle influence on your own attitude that can make a difference in your performance. I?ve been in courses full of students over from Asia who would, upon entering the room, literally pause a moment and bow toward the prof. Since they?d do it regardless if his back was turned, I think that means it?s respect for the position, not for the person.

So catch yourself next time you start to call him HeyYou & try bowing mentally only in respect for the POSITION even if that Prof of Irrelevancy is a kook, but don?t do it physically so anyone else sees. ha ha.
