is it alright to take a 1yr old on vacation?

No Lifer
We have twins and they will be 11mo when we go. We're planning Bermuda so it'll be mostly beach for 4 days. Right now at 9mo. they aren't even walking or crawling. We are pretty much at the end of the carrier stage too because they've gotten so heavy (and not likely to bring those with us anyway)... we're pretty much relegated to carrying them in our arms until they can walk on their own which probably won't happen in those 2 months time. I suppose this is what everyone else does - or use a body carrier - the backpack type ones. Is this more trouble than it's worth or will it be a non-issue?

I also just thought of the car-travel issue... I don't suppose they have car seat laws the same as here...

Took my daughter on a cruise when she was about 13 months old. We just took her stroller and car seat with us and everything was fine. We also took her to India when she was 11 months old w/o any problems.

If the people I observe are any indication: Taking little kids on vacation is a bad idea. It ruins your trip and they dont seem to like it much anyway.

Really depends on the kid. For our cruise, we went with my parents and my sister's family. Everyone had a huge blast and my nieces (6 and 8) had so much fun with my daughter.

There's a big dif between 11months and 6/8 years olds. Sorry OP I dont think its a good idea to take a 1 year old and have them back in the sun for days. You wont have fun either.

I traveled everywhere with my daughter, it was easy. I used a stroller, and my arms. I never cared for carriers much, so I generally just bare arm carried her when I had to walk rough terrain.

If you don't enjoy having your kids with you, adoption might be a good idea ;^)

You will have a much better time if you leave the baby at home. Kid is too young to appreciate anything you'll do/see and you'll spend all your time caring for/amusing the kid. My two pennies. If the kid is about 4 you can start to introduce him/her to museums/tourist attractions/fun in a foreign country or whatever.

:Q I wouldnt be comfortable leaving my baby at home alone for that long. She might order/watch naughty shows on HBO/Showtime after dark 🙂

1 yr and 6 yrs is different. id take a one year old on a day drive somewhere

not on an airplane, and not to bermuda...save that one for a few years down the road and drive somewhere that not more than a few hours away this time.

To each his own I suppose. We had a blast as did my daughter (not from the cruise ship but being with family)

Where did I even IMPLY that I don't like being with my kids? We went on plenty of vacations/trips when they were younger... but cooking an 11 month old in the sun isn't ideal for anyone.

You just have to keep them covered. I always wear pants with cargo pockets, and I'd carry supplies to make an improvised canopy for my daughter. Between that, and sunblock, she never got burned.

We would have those beach umbrellas of course. We have no plans of keeping them in the sun while on the beach. I'm more worried about their crying all the time, etc. being anywhere for an extended amount of time. I've never really taken them out anywhere further than the local park for an hour, and restaurants too. I also figure with 2 months to go, they have more time to mature and grow interest in things (as they have shown the last few months already).

I would do trial runs first but this is a vacation deal that is expiring soon and trying to decide if we should jump on it. I guess what I'm looking for are definitive "no" answers... anything we may not have considered. Otherwise it looks like we're going adventuring. Oh one more thing... I don't ever see too many strollers going through the baggage claim...

We took both kids when they were 1 and 2 to the beach. Wasn't too bad because we had a big stroller with us. Kept them covered, etc. If I had to carry them around, that would have completely sucked.

I just don't think it's a good idea, overall. They won't remember it, for starters. So there's no value in it for them. You're 100% certain to not have a good of a time as you would if the kids stayed home. Unless you have loads of disposable income I'd just save the money and wait a few years.

I don't have kids but my two closest friends both have kids 2 and under, so I'm just talking from my experiences while hanging around them.

How do you know they won't remember it? Even if they don't explicitly remember the vacation, it adds to the childhood experience, and helps shape their character. One of my earliest memories is going to Ocean City MD when I was 18mos old. Great memories from my first vacation :^)

Also, I'll say it again. If having kids keeps you from having fun, there's always adoption. Kids are the fun, and they make trips better.

Who said ANYTHING about "keeps you from having fun". You act as those that think it isn't a good idea are suggesting that there is no way to have fun with kids. I have TONS of fun with my kids, since the day they were born and has not slowed my family down on any level.

Doesnt matter if they have car seat laws, its called common sense. Dont put your kid in a car without one.

A 1 year old is easy peasy.

Lather the rugrat up in sunscreen, put a huge hat on him and plop him on a blanket in the shade.

Consider that a lot / most of us on this board never sat in one (before it became law). It won't be for extended amounts of trips... just a cab ride from the airport, etc. It does look like planes require booster seats for ~20lbs so I guess we'll have those anyway.

LOL thats the same "excuse" my mom says all the time "You kids never sat in a car seat"
Well we're the ones that SURVIVED. I'm sure that MANY children would have survived more car-crashes if there were car seats/seat belts back years ago.

Get a multipurpose unit. The car seat/carrier that clips into a stroller. They're very convenient.
