I'm abiut to instal a second HD. The only space my case has for it will have it directly under my other HD with barly any clearence. Is this fine or will it pose heat probs?

depends how hot the hard drives are if they are 15k rpm SCSI drives I wouldn't recommend it...
I have a 7200rpm IBM75gxp and a fujitsu 5400rpm sandwiched together and it's fine, niether are very hot.

Check out www.storagereview.com they usually mention heat in their reveiws. I had a WD Expert 7200rpm and it was pretty cool.

5400rpm drives are almost always cool as well, so your WD is probably fine, what kind of drive is the new one?

The IBM 75GXP is quite cool, and I according to the reviews at SR the WD Expert isn't all that hot either. You should be ok.
I had the same setup (30gig 75gxp, 9gig expert) and I was fine for the 3 weeks i had them in there. it was never to hot (i sold hte expert becuase i had 5 ide devices, and I wanted to free an IDE slot so i ditched my promise card)

i think i can get a fan to point at the two drives from the front. Then i should have nothing to worry about, right?

I have 4 IDE drives stacked with about .5" in between each of them. It gets kinda hot but I've never run into any problems.

I'm with superbaby, I have 3 IDE drives right on top of each other no problems. If you are concerned Radio Shack has a little squirrel cage fan that would work great for this, it's a neat little fan.

We had 2 disks stacked in a server here at the office, they heated so much one of them eventually died and we lost most of what was there. Fortunately we had everything backed up. Take a look at places where you would not usually put a hard drive: the bottom of the case, over the power supply, under the floppy drive, etc. and see if you can put your disk there, maybe with some velcro or other kind of attachment. I've had a server with a disk attached with velcro, and worked fine for years. You could also use those plastic thingys, they are quite strong too. Just make sure the disk doesn't move at all.
