Is it a heat issue?

My dad has a PIII 850MHz on an Abit CUBX-E, When he uses the computer everything is fine. But when he leaves it for a few hours the whole system locks up. I think it might be a temp issue because the Asus PC Probe readings are in the mid 50sC at full load. What do you think?

I think the room temp is about 68-70F and I'm not sure about the MB & case temps.

good cheap heatsink: Taisol CEk733092, about $11

good mid-price heatsink: Globalwin FOPs or Taisol CGK742092

others: Alphas and hedgehogs(higher priced)

well, until you tell us what your mb temp is, we can't really diagnose the problem? YOu may need more case cooling, or a new heatsink.

If you have any thermal grease you should try that first. Often the OEM providers don't put enough on to make a good heat seal, resulting in chips overheating and locking up.

Sounds kinda od. You did not say if it is overclocked so I assume it isn't. I wouldn't think it is a heat problem if it is doing it while it is idle. Try turning off advanced power management and see if it is something like the standbye doing it.
