is it a good idea to buy Used tires?

my friend is kinda broke right now and one his tires just died,
his car has 16' wheels so the cost for buy a set of 4 205/55/16 would be roughly around 400. (mounted, balanced)
he really doesn't have that much money, and he want to resort in Used tires.

any comments or experience with Used tires?

my theory is, New tires come with warranty and "should" last longer than Used.
but as with anything, the price between "New" and "Barely Used" is still a big difference.

i don't think so, ur are risking ur life along with ur car, in my opinion, those aren't two think i enjoy risking

I guess it depends on how used and why somebody is selling them.

I bought a set of rims and tires used like 6 years ago and front tires are still on the car. This is probably the last time they will pass inspection.

used rear tyres are good for drifting....but thats another topc entirely 🙂

you are much better off buying new, unless of course the used ones still have most of their tread.

I wouldn't go that far as saying :by choosing "used tires" you are risking your life" that's totally american! and I don't like it! of course, you can give me exemples that people died because of tired failure, but personally, I don't give a sh*t to that! My advice would be, however, similiar to the other guys----buy new tires!! It surely would last longer! and you can be sure of the condition of tires..........so...maybe it will cost more, but it's worth it.
and it's well worth it, not because it will save you life, but because of what it is.

I bought a set of used Michelin X-Ones from the wrecking yard.

Used as in, someone bought them and crashed their car the same day so they were in mint condition.

About $300 saved. 😀

There is nothing wrong with a good used set of tires .. try the local auto wrecking yards for a fresh set or scour the classifieds. Try and buy a matched set of four.

Three tire ratings are on every sidewall of every tire

traction A B C, A being the best, B is fine
temp. A B C, A being the best, B is fine
Wear: varies .. a tire with a wear rating of 180 will wear out much faster than a tire that has a rating of 460 lets say. The tire rated at 180 has a softer compound and will stick like glue to the road but you'll need another set in a year. A tire that has a 400 or 500 wear rating stamped on the sidewall will last for years.

Don't buy a tire rated C on Temp, that means that the tire runs hotter at sustained highway speeds than an A or B rated tire. Coupled with overloading or underinflation could cause traed loss or a blowout.

Good luck ..

There's really nothing wrong with used tires, if you are careful.

The biggest issue it making sure the old tires are mounted so that they are still going in the same direction as they were on their initial install. In other words, if the raised white letters were on the outside, on the driver's side, they need to be mounted so they rotate the same way. If they end uo turning opposite from the way they did on the initial install, you run a very good risk of having steel belts separating.

Most reputable shops will mark the direction they were initially installed in.

There's nothing wrong with buying used tires... if you bought 6 month old tires, how is that any more dangerous than you buying new tires and at the 6 month point? I doubt you would say your car is more dangerous now. Just make sure the treads on the tires are still good.

I would definitely buy used tires.. I have seen some very nice tires for sale for like "one season use" or something like that and they have 80% or more treadlife left.. they are no more than 1/2 the price of new most of the time.. just make sure you look them over well before you buy, if you find a good set, for cheap.. don't hesitate to buy them IMO..

good luck

It's better then driving around on bald tires..go to a very busy tire shop and see what they have..and don't buy Firestone rejects. They probably can't sell em anyway. Good luck.🙂

Yeah, buying used Firestone's is not the smartest thing to do.

Not entirely true. The most popular brand is going to have the highest number of failures, more on the road, more failures.

Most failures are caused by low tire pressure, hot summer roads and/or overloading. The lawyers will never tell you that though!

<< i don't think so, ur are risking ur life along with ur car, in my opinion, those aren't two think i enjoy risking >>

Then I guess nobody should ever buy a used car.
