It won't kill you, but it won't taste quite as good. If you're picky, go buy a new one.

99% of the time the date on the package is when they predict the quality won't be as good, NOT when it goes "bad."

Since brownie mix is really cheap, I wouldn't bother using it though.

I REALLY wish food was more dangerous than it is so that ALL the posters with lame food questions would have killed themselves off long ago.

You've seen the commercials where the clueless guy stares at the meat in the grocery store blankly wondering what to do with it? I'm sorry but some people DESERVE to starve and improve the gene pool.

It just degrades over time and gets stale. I always throw out any flour if it's over 3 months old because I don't think it tastes as good. It picks up odd flavors and depending on how humid your area is can just get stale.

Since it's a dry good that won't get rancid, it probably has a pretty good shelf life. Notice it says "better if used by" and not "don't use after". It won't hurt you and it (probably) won't taste bad, but it won't taste the same as a fresh box either.

Have you ever eaten a package of year old saltine crackers? They're not as good as fresh crackers, are they? It's the same idea here.

Edit: FoBoT has a good point too. Baking soda/powder will break down over time, so if it gets too old it won't rise properly. I should still be fine after only a year though.
