I'd say 3. one each of Mastercard, visa and amex to cover. But you don't really need more than two.

Oh yeah, what are some other good CC companies out there?

CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select VISA (there's also a college version available)
Earn 1% cash rebate on all purchases.
No annual fee.

Good luck and remember applying for several cc's is bad for your credit score because of all the "inquiries" which appear.

<< How widely accepted are AMEX cards nowadays? >>

RossMAN is correct in saying that Amex is not as widely accepted as Visa/MC. However, in my experience, Amex is accepted in about 95% of restaurants and retail stores. Most online retailers take it too. The places where Visa has a REALLY big advantage are gas stations and grocery stores. Amex is not always accepted there, but Visa is.

I have the Costco Cash Rebate Platinum Amex. I use it quite a bit because you get a % cash back check every year. I would never go without a Visa, but Amex is accepted in a lot of places.

One question; Does having a check card count as credit?

As of now I have a ATM check card ("mastercard") and a student visa both wells fargo. would this count as two credit cards? I'm thinking about applying for amex blue when i build up my credit. I just got my first credit card should I wait about 6 months?

Your debit (ATM check) card is NOT a credit card, so therefore it only counts as 1 cc not 2.

I would definitely wait at least 6 months before applying for an Amex (more like a year). Credit takes TIME to establish, but once you get there it's well worth the wait. Just make sure to USE your Visa cc don't just keep a zero balance, charge everything on it, pay it off every month, sometimes carry a balance for 1-2 months, just show some sort of activity with your cc.

and just a reminder, NEVER EVER use your debit/check card when ordering online.
