Is it 20/20 @ 1600x1200

Ok I recently built a new rig which upped my UT2004 resolution to 1600x1200. I have noticed that my mouse seems less accurate than when I used to play at 1024x768. Is this all in my head? I read some stuff on tomshardware.com [the ultimate mouse hunt article] about mouse resolutions. Do I need to buy a mouse with a better dpi? I hope there is another solution because I really don't want to switch mice. My hand has conformed to the one I have. There is nothing special about the mouse I have. It is a microsoft optical blue mouse. All the high dpi mice on the market are funky shapes and I don't like them. What should I do? Can I overclock my current mouse to get a better dpi? Can I put a better laser in it?

To just answer your question. You would need a more powerful mouse. MX518, Razor Copperhead, etc.

Allright now I feel old. I guess this isn't well known anymore.

Back when people used mice almost exclusively via a PS/2 connection, it was not uncommon to up the refresh rate of the mouse from 60hz to 200hz. (If I recall correctly, Windows NT4 and 2000 had built in controls for changing this, but it didn't go as high as 200hz. I think it went up to 100.

It made it much more responsivee. Some thought of it as overclocking a mouse :) USB mice have a refresh rate of 125hz so less people were doing it over time.

navecko:

What do you mean your mouse is "less accurate"? Is it less responsive->leading to it seeming harder to aim and thus less accurate?

How fast is your UT2004 game running at 1600x1200? Maybe it's a matter of framerate and not your mouse? Can you try turning off any effects you might have on like AntiAliasing and see if the mouse moves better? Or maybe try a resolution in between like 1280x960 and see if it's better? If it does improve maybe it's a framerate issue.

There is no lag in the mouse and I am using the same input setings [speed, smoothing, render 0 frames ahead]. Also stat fps >=40. It's hard to describe. When I'm aiming at a target, I have the accuracy as if that target were farther away/smaller. Most noticeable was my decreased accuracy hitting shock balls. Maybe it's just in my head. On tomshardware.com it was saying that at higher resolutions, the mouse driver uses interpolation to average out where the mouse should be on the screen relative to where it is on the pad because it's eye can't resolve 1.9 mill dpi [1600x1200]. I switched back to 1024x768 and there is definately a difference. One more thing, I use a very high sensitivity setting so moving the mouse ~1 inches gives me 180 degrees.

While it might not be the source of the problem, it is possible to increase the polling rate of the USB ports. I've not tested this utility, but it might be a starting point.

I upped the refresh rate on my desktop to 250Hz. My Logitech Dual Optical can't handle anything higher.
Note too that this increases the refresh rate of all your USB ports - in addition to your mouse, some other devices might have a problem with higher refresh rates.

Edit: Link updated.

Get a better mouse.

MX518 can be had for $40. It's a great mouse.

EDIT: sure it uses an LED, but its dam fast.

If you want a laser mouse, you might have to get the G5/G7.

that i have never heard before lol

Never used a PS/2 mouse? You could "overclock" them by increasing the polling rate. I never noticed a difference though.

theres your problem right there.

just mess about with your settings untill it feels ok again. and about having to use a newer mouse, thats bs, i play UT2004 1280x1024 with a logitec first pilot ball mouse, which is what? 5 years old? and im still managing. but i dont play with high sensitivity. when i move my mouse like 3 inches it'll turn 180 degrees.

what might be more for you though is the logitec G5 or any new laser/optical mouse. they should have buttons to adjust DPI on the fly so it'll be more/less accurate with the push of a button. still i'd recommend messing with your settings in unreal.

I have adjusted the settings in Unreal. They are different for each resolution. I like a high sensitivity. I feel that with lower sensitivity I have to move my hand more and there is more chance for error. I'm not sure if I know what I'm talking about. I think I do but maybe I don't. In conclusion, I'll take another look at the high dpi retail mice because overclocking my usb ports doesn't help and unfortunately installing a new laster in my current mouse seems impractical. Over the past couple of days, I seem to have adjusted somewhat to the mouse at 1600x1200.
