Is is worth getting the Blackberry Pearl if I'm not going to get a data/email plan?

Any special features/functions for the regular phone that are worthwhile?

It's only $100 after rebate w/2 yr contract...

That scroll ball makes it pretty neat to play on the internet. I think it's more of a traditional phone than a blackberry. I still wouldn't get it unless I had a data plan to go with it. What service provider are you with?

It's negative $25 with a 2 year contract on Amazon.com

But why would you want it without the data plan?

The babes dig crackberries ;)

Not after a month of their significant other owning one ;)

The wife and I both picked up one from the Blackberry.com site. Same deal as Amazon only BB.com allowed me to get two phones. Be aware that is around 60$ to get both activated unless you can smooth talk the CSR. My wife has it for the organizer and PDA functions, no data. I have it for work and to play brick breaker with the scroll. My company comps the data and some of the voice costs.

I love it, everyone in the office was flashing treos left and right, I get the last smirk with this thing. It's so small it makes me feel sorry for them having to haul treos around and plug them in every couple of hours.

Mobile.blackberry.com has a few more free games (sudoku, fishing, spider solitare, texas hold 'em).

My Treo 650 had better battery life than my Pearl does right now. I honestly miss a few things about my Treo.

Awesome! Thanks for that.

I'd have a hard time justifying a data plan for myself if my company didn't pay for it. I also wouldn't consider a BB without a data plan.

Hmmm... nice deal but I can only choose T-Mobile.

Currently with Cingular and 1) cannot get a new phone for free/cheap without signing up for a new contract, 2) cannot port my phone number if I get a new plan/contract.

I think you can port your number and pick which carrier you have by buying through blackberry.com

Err, why Perl if no plan? In fact, it would probably not work correctly. It will constantly complain about no connection.

Wrong. It's still a PDA through and through, although there are much better interfaces on competing machines if you just want the PDA features. I have a Pearl, and I love it, although I'm thinking of cancelling the data plan since I don't use it that much. It's come in handy a couple of times being able to find phone numbers or access google maps while on the road, but not sure if it's worth the extra money every month.

Your computer's stats are in your signature. Not only that, you mention the model of the RAM. That is depressing.

I also post in the CPU/OC forum and find it's easier than listing it any time someone asks what I've got on my E6300. It's more useful than saying "yeah I got an intel and some DDR2" because the people who are interested in those stats will want to know what I'm talking about. I don't claim to have the best PC or highest overclock or most xtreme rad-badical "uber rig". Notice how I don't post about my mobile phone, laptop, TFT, TV, HiFi?

My pearl was my first new phone in a number of years. I called Cingular to let them know that I still had an old ATT phone from the first time around and they could not do much with me. I was told I was one of a couple hundred people left on the old system. New phone, new plan.

I just got the pearl and I think its very handy, small and just what I wanted. I did look at the iPhone and was amazed at what it could do. I think its a bit impractical for my needs but it sure does look sexy. I settled for an iPhone theme on my Pearl though.

Actually, putting iPhone themes on other new phones/smartphones/PDAs amuses me for some reason.
