Is Intel putting some logic into their code names?

I've noticed that recent tick-tock architectures seem to have one word the same in their compound names.

Sandy/Ivy Bridge

Has/Broad well

Sky Lake/mont

Coincidence or purposeful?

Each pair uses the same architecture, but the latter of each pair is the die shrink.

Same suffix = die shrink = tick
Different suffix = new architecture = tock

Also Silvermont->Airmont. Of course it isn't a coincidence. They haven't always been doing it though.

And there's Knights Ferry, Knights Corner, etc....

It definitely makes it easier to identify projects by the codename. And as far as I can tell, it's definitely not a coincidence.

Northwood / Prescott

They were going to call it Morning Wood but somehow decided against it.

"Skymont" is not the name of the 10nm "tock"...at least according to that reddit AMA ;)

Pairs use same architecture.
But suffix or prefix can change. So if one part of the compound word is the same then architecture is the same.

Haswell(22nm tock)/Broadwell (14nm tick)

Skylake (14nm tock)/Skymont (10nm tick)

Prescott was the very opposite of the tick/tock model. They both shrunk the process and massively changed the architecture.

these are all towns or rivers in Oregon, aren't they?

Yes, they are. I've lived on Prescott street before. I've also seen many life size sandy (river) bridges as well!

The ONLY one I've not got a clue on is ivy bridge. Still don't get the reference.

You are 100% correct on this one. It's not a random street in Oregon. Sandy Bridge however does not have a geographical meaning but instead had a convoluted path through legal to get where it is. Also, legal is the #1 reason why geographical places are used for these code names.

It obviously wasn't. Looks like you missed the joke of it...

It's an enormous coincidence. You should tell them what you noticed and maybe they'll reward you.
