Is intel HD3000 enough for an external display w/ 1920x1080?

If I connect a Sandy bridge laptop with integrated HD3000 to an external 24'' lcd monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080, is it gonna work well? Should I go with a discrete video card?

I use external monitor mainly for reading documents, programming, and video playback.

That's good to know. So the discrete ones are mainly for gamers? I was a little concerned about playing HD movies with an integrated video card on a large monitor...

If it's the latest Intel integrated graphics (being Sandy Bridge), from what I've read, it's twice as fast as the original Core i graphics, which were already good enough for basic use (including HD video).
