Is Intel Core 2 Duo better than AMD X2 for Video Encoding ?

Hi ,

Im about to upgrade my CPU from an AMD 64 X2 3800+ .

I was looking at an Intel CPU because my 3800+ can overclock to rear enough 2.5GHz stable so anything in the X2 Range would not be that much of a change .

Ive never bought an Intel CPU or motherboard before , if anyone has any advice on which would be suited to Video Encoding it would be very helpful .

Even an E6300 will stomp all over an FX-62 in video encoding, so yes.

Oh, and I'd suggest an E6600 for video encoding because of the cache.

I'd just get it for the speed. Clock speed, that is.

Wrong.

I fail to see the E6300 stomping over the FX-62.
Only ones stomping on the FX-62 are the E6600 & above.

I do realize with OCing, the E6300 could likely surpass the FX-62 easily enough.

Let's keep it real now...</a> :p

Let's say they're pretty close at stock speeds. GamePC used an overclocked FX-62 in that graph (although the results for a stock part are there also.)

With a little o/c the E6300 *will* stomp all over the FX-62. That's probably a more accurate statement. :D

They used an OC'd FX-62 @ 3GHz and the FX-62 @ bone stock speed of 2.8GHz.
An OC'd E6300 would perform better than a stock E6300, but the smaller cache is still a factor vs the other Core 2 CPU's.

So if we were lucky, intel would have released a new line of chips that couldn't outperform those that were already on the market?

Exactly, then we could be spending $300 on an X2 3800 instead of $150. :D

.

My 3.0 ghz northwood will stay pretty close to your 3800+ in encoding benchmarks. Dollar for dollar the conroes will spank the x2 in encoding benches.

That being said, if you don't want to spend a whole lot on new ram, etc. just get an X2.

He's got one already ;)

Yes a conroe will hammer an X2 into the floor, if you're overclocking that is, otherwise the equivalent pricing kicks in and all bets are off.

Hah BobtheLost missed that he already had an X2.. too early to be posting. But anyway look at these benchmarks of a X2 4600+ ($266 @ newegg) versus a E6400 (242.99 @ newegg):

Pinnacle studio 9 - 41meg file

Clone DVD 2.7 transcoding DVD 9 to DVD 5 GB

Premier Pro 2.0 - converting Mpeg2 to WMV9

DivX 6.2.2 Benchmark

They are pretty close and the extra $$$ for the X2 maybe worth not having to replace the motherboard. But personally I am very happy with my conroe. I had an AMD64 3500+ that I considered upgrading to do more encoding work, but seeign how quite and cool the conroe is under load I am glad I went with Intel.

Thanks for all the excellent information , i proberly will go for an E6400 because i have to buy a new motherboard and RAM too .

Because i use my PC 90% for Video Encoding this sound the better option over what im running just now .

Just as we'll the price of RAM has fallen quite dramatically in the UK , in the past year or so , you can now get 1Gb for the same price 512Mb was a year ago . :)

PS . I take it the 2mb Cache on the E6400 vs 4mb on the E6600 wont make that big
a Difference for Video Encoding ?
