Is indoor tanning safe?

I normally get pretty dark in the summer, but during the winter months I'm reduced to an olivish, pale skin tone and I wanted to try getting an indoor tan. I figure as long as it is done in moderation I will be fine, but some articles I've read by doctors seem to shun the use of tanning beds/booths. The UV is of a higher intensity indoor than outdoor, but it penetrates the skin less deeply because it is used for a very short amount of time which seems fine to me, but I'm still skeptical.

If you don't go often you should be fine. It's not totally safe but neither is tanning outside.

How often would be considered conservative and relatively safe?

you tan because your skin is getting damaged by UV. same tan = same damage. why pay money to get skin cancer?

i'd support a health insurance policy where using a tanning salon increases your premium, much like smoking. i don't see why the rest of us should have to subsidize your dermotology bills.

I thought no tanning was safe. I heard somewhere that a tan is just dead skin cells or something. I probably wrong.
