Is iMessage Down?

Users apparently aren't getting the iMessage

Apple is apparently having trouble getting its iMessage across.

IMessage is Apple's proprietary instant messaging services for iOS and Mac OS. Users have outlined their issues in several Apple support forum discussions (here and here), where they complain about being unable to send or receive messages. The problems appear to affect users across the globe, suggesting that the problem is on Apple's end as opposed to that of a service provider.

Apple introduced iMessage as part of iOS 5 last October, offering users on the iPhone, iPod, and iPad a way to communicate with one another for free as long as they had an Internet connection. Apple added the functionality to its Macs as part of Mountain Lion in July.

The reported iMessage problems follow an outage at Apple's iCloud service a few days ago, in which millions of users were unable to access e-mail for a couple of days. Apple said little about that problem except that it was working on it and would have it corrected ASAP. ICloud e-mail is now operational.

Apple's iCloud status page currently states that "all services are online." This status page, however, has been unreliable, or at least slow to update, where outage are concerned.

A poll on tech site 9to5mac shows that about half of users are experiencing problems with the service and cannot reliably send or receive messages.
Apple so far has not commented on the outage.

After problems I had with iMessage in the first few months, I turned it off completely. I strictly use regular text messages.

Not free. I'm limited to 200 messages. The rest are $.20 ea or somesuch; robbery to carry .5kb or so of traffic...

I tried using it for the second time today since it came out and it wasn't working. I thought it was on my end but apparently not.

True dat. But on the other hand it just works. For me the volume is not really an issue because I don't use more than 100 per month.

Just to round out the seemingly interesting negative impression of iMessage...

I have used it without reliability issue since its launch and found it to be so reliable that I canceled my text plan entirely as with the 4S it's nothing or unlimited and for the few people I know that don't also exclusively use iMessage (non-iOS users, everyone who uses iOS I know has iMessage active and uses it without issue) I don't come anywhere near paying more per text than I'd pay for unlimited. That same savings as a result of iMessage has been quite tangible.

For me, iMessage just works, it's unfortunate you have had issues because it's pretty awesome to get messages across all my devices, no matter which is in front of me at the time, especially with Messages for 10.8.

MY iMessage keeps going down, and the most annoying bit is, it loads for a minute then fails, I wish it gave me the option at the start to send it as a text instead, when I need to urgently send a message! arrrghhh!
