is Ikea the be-all, end-all for computer desks?

I <3 Ikea computer desks, ages ago I wanted a super small all metal desk. I got one called the Nester, it was tiny, but man it was perfect for what I needed. I think it cost me like 35 bones.

I wouldn't burn Ikea furniture for wood because whatever adhesive is used to make particle board probably isn't healthy to inhale. They do make some furniture that is acceptable quality for price-conscious shoppers. I made my last desk with metal legs from Ikea and wood from Home Depot.



It sounds like you made the top out of 2x8s or something like that and the legs out of 4x4s? I think I'd rather have a desk from Ikea.

No you wouldn't. This is sanded and stained. The veneer won't peel off if I leave a drink on it and it won't become irreparably wobbly if somebody bumps into it. I didn't use any hardware but glue in this case.

once LCD's became commonplace, I felt like my Jerker was a bit too deep. the back half never got used for anything except collecting dust.

how deep was the jerker? the one i use now is like 30" deep and is just fine for my 2 LCDs, i actually have them pushed back as far as they can go

Idea furniture is absolutely horrible. Good furniture is pricey, but always worth it.

I'm looking for a 6'w x 2 1/2'd desk. It needs to have either a laminate or metal top (I drop hot stuff a lot). No shelves, no keyboard tray.

I just picked up the Fredde, very spacious and I'm really liking it so far. Only two pre-made wire management holes, but not a big deal. Solid construction.

You could buy add-one. Ikea stopped selling the Jerker years ago.

Sad sad day. I had to give mine away when I graduated from college, and the galant just isn't the same. It's still good though (the galant).

not really worth it to me at this stage... I'm buying furniture for the apartment where I'm living now, but I can see myself moving in the next 2-3 years. don't want to spend a grand on a desk based on the dimensions of my current home office only to find myself in a couple years with a desk that's too big for the room. (if I find myself buying a house/condo in the next 2-3 years, then at that point I'd probably get something custom made)

I would say just go to Ikea regardless. Either VIKA (Table Bar now) or GALANT. Both have various desk lengths and widths. VIKA can be had for less than $100 -- less than $50 if you choose the cheapest options.

I absolutely hate Ikea, and I absolutely hate cheap furniture.

Cheap furniture a fast ticket to: Furniture falls apart within 3 years. Replace often.

Where as if you put a decent dime into your furniture, it can last anywhere from 5, to 10, to lifetime depending on the construction and its usage. Having said that though, I can admit that the Galant is a decent desk. They have way more crappier furniture than the Galant - which has served its purpose for me. I wanted simplicity in a desk, and frankly the Ikea Galant was one of few that simply had a flat (yet big) board that could be customized to suit modern color/design.

I'm setting up a work room in my basement and I need a big desk. The one I'm using right now is just too small. I'd actually like to get 3 desks with those dimensions so I could set up a U shaped area.

There was a huge nerd outage thread about it when they did away with it.

I've never cared much about a computer desk but now that I'm looking to use it as a work station, I'm mad that I can't find the right thing.

They replaced it with something similar... Not exact, but similar. There's a monstrosity called the FREDERICK with an eff load of attachments and whatnot.

As far as I know they never made swing out shelves like the Jerker had.

Ikea stuff is mostly junk, although it's stylish. Probably not too comfortable either.

You won't hate yourself when you don't like it after buying though, since it's so cheap.

The problem with the cheaper Ikea tables is they begin to sag in the middle due to the lack of support so you usually need a 5th leg to help that out.
