Is ice skating somewhat/close to rollberblading?

I want to know cause by the time I learned how to rollerblade, I never set foot in the ice skating rink. I want to know cause I might want to go do some speed skating.

It's the same to me. I started w/ rollerblading, and when I sat foot on the ice rink, it took me a couple of minutes to adjust to the ice. After that, it was just like rollerblading.

it's somewhat similar but stopping and other basics are different...

i have k2 kinetics and salomon af pro... skating on a pair of ice skates just feels different from a pair of rollerblades 🙂

It's pretty similar.

I use to spend the whole summer rollerblading and when I got on the ice in the winter I was OK at ice skating.

Now stopping is a whole different ballgame. I can ice skate pretty fast, but stopping is impossible.

I play roller and ice hockey. Inline and ice skating is only slightly different as the skating stride is very similar. By slightly different, I'm referring to the friction and stopping motions. However on sport-court, you can "hockey stop" just the same but it takes more distance.

If you're doing speed skating, I think you'd have to take friction into serious consideration. Training on land (roller) will greatly help you with the power in your strides. You'll still have to work with those high-speed cross-overs though - and you can only do so on a large ice surface. Pro ice hockey players go with inline during the off-season to help keep in shape all the time. The friction makes it that much harder on your quads and is very beneficial.

actually, stopping is the same for me both ways. I just go straight for the wall. Isnt' that how your suppose to do it?? 😛

Ice skating hurts my feet.......

BTW, do any of you guys have hot roller blading chicks that hang around your neighbourhood? Thats the only reason why I want to go to LA.

Not on concrete/asphalt unless you have strong ankles and am used to it. Huge wear on your wheels though. On sport-court, and with soft wheels that stick, you can do it pretty close to the distance it takes on ice. I really need to stop doing it unnecessarily as it wears out the expensive wheels for indoor.

heh yea, u'd probably rub ur wheels flat😛 with skates the ice gives against the hard metal blades. just watch hockey skaters if u want to see a quick example.

i can do it on concrete 🙂 80mm 82A wheels

you can't control it like an ice hockey stop though.
