My sister need to replace hers.
I was going to tell her to get an HP DeskJet, maybe the 940.

HP has decent printers. The reason I like them is because it has the heads on the cartridges, so if you replace the cartridge you replace the heads. Epson often has better print quality, but the heads are made into the printer, so if they become clogged you will have to replace the whole printer.

I have a hp deskjet 932C and I like it very much. The only thing is the consumables (ink) are expensive for it. Still it gives good print quality and mine is very quiet. They do good driver support and Linux usually has drivers for their printers. I use mine occasionally, but I have a laser that I do the bulk of my printing on (It only prints black and white). They are usually cheaper in the long run.

depends on what you want ... IMO:

The HP 9xx are old technology, still using the same engine and mechanical setup as the original Deskjet ages ago. Actual physical resolution is low, and I found recent Windows drivers often lose connection to the printer mid-page - on various completely different systems. Their drivers however make good use of the printers, so image quality is actually quite good.

Epson's and Canon's recent printers have way higher physical resolutions What I like about the midrange and high end Canons is that they're using separate ink tanks for each color, which brings cost down considerably, especially when printing photos. Plus both companies offer true photo printers with six-color setup and zero-margin printing.
Neither however have disposable print heads.

Up until I got my Epson C80 a few months ago, I always used HP inkjets. My experience with them is somewhat limited, as I've had only about 4 different HPs in the past 10 years, but a central issue kept coming up with each one: the paper feeding was inconsistent and unreliable after a year or so of not very heavy use. This drove me crazy. I'm not sure about the Epson feeding mechanism, but so far the C80 seems to be an incredible value. I really love the quality of the output on this thing.

I have an HP Officejet T45, of about 18 months now, and have recently purchased an HP 960cse for photos, and couldn't be happier with either 1. The Officejet's ink cartridges were just changed today for the First time, since new, and I have run about 2000 pages thru it on the original ink. I also enjoy the Photo quality of the 960cse.
