Honestly, I just couldn't do it to my kid(s). Nor would I want to. Amazingly we raised two, pretty damn well behaved kids without any type of physical punishment. To each their own though I guess.

Too much is getting questioned as abuse these days. The hands-off approach is overrated.

When my wife and I were going to lunch today, we were driving along a row of office buildings. A lady, man and a couple of kids (looked like 4-8 years old) exited one of the buildings and started to get into a truck. One of the kids started to dart across the road, when the moms super reflexes (most moms have super reflexes when it comes to their kids) grabbed his arm and jerked him out of way of an oncoming car. She then processed to do the finger in the face thing.

When my wife and I passed by the scene, the kids face had an "I dont care" look about the scolding he was receiving.

I would have much rather seen her get the dads belt, whip the kids butt till he did care, then try to use logic on someone who can not understand life and death situations.

A 6 year old may not understand getting run over by a car and dying, but I sure bet he will understand the searing pain of a belt on his butt. The pain on his butt will go away after a few hours. Having his head run over and squashed will never go away.

Kids at an early age can not use logic - but they do understand action and reaction.

I dont think people really consider the lesser of 2 evils. Tell the kid about getting run over, and he/she does not understand. But tell the kid is he/she runs out into the road they will get their butt wiped, they will understand that for sure.

Also, I dont think discipline is a rubber stamp. Some kids are fine being put in a corner or having a time out - while others hate it. Spankings may work for some kids, while it will not work for others.

If the hot sauce deters the child from repeating his/her behavior, and causes no physical harm, then so be it.

It depends on the severity of the hot sauce used, and how it's used.

If it's just dumping hot sauce in a kid's mouth for something completely unrelated, and it's hot enough to cause physical pain, then I'd say yes.

If it's putting tobasco on something the kid won't stop shoving in their mouth (anyone watch House recently), then I'd say no.

Meh, when I was a kid my mom would put red pepper on my tongue when I said things I shouldn't. Punishment seemed to fit the crime - bad things come out of mouth, bad things go into mouth. I certainly didn't think it was abuse, but I certainly learned not to say things I shouldn't in front of my parents, too.

The only reason I disapprove of this is that the child will grow up with a general dislike for hot sauce. That would sadden me.

probably doesn't work on korean, thai and mexican kids.

much lulz

Same situation but with soap. I also got my ass whipped with a belt. I turned out just fine.

No. I don't see how it's any worse than spankings, or soap in the mouth. Children need to be disciplined, and taught that their are consequences to their actions. If this is the punishment that gets through to the kid, than that's perfectly fine with me. Since there is no physical harm from hot sauce I don't see what the issue is.

When I was 15, I fell asleep while studying around 11. I was forced to stand outside without a shirt on while it was around 5 degrees outside for about 30 minutes.

Meh, I call it discipline.

Yes, it's abuse. But it's abuse because she isn't disciplining properly.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

It's abuse if the mother is mad and she's doing it to inflict vengeance or revenge.

It's discipline if it's established ahead of time that it's the punishment for misdeeds, and if she handles discipline without showing anger...

IMO, It's no worse that putting soap in a mouth for swearing...

Korean actually.

Also, tons of people would be surprised as to the interesting forms of punishment asians can come up with.

Had a Columbian GF at one time: She told me her mom's favorite punishment involved making the kid kneel in a corner.. Like a "time out".....

....except with a handful of dried rice scattered on the floor underneath the kid.

Typical Dr. Phil crap. Ugg I hate that guy. Anything to make him look like he's the good guy and making this out to be like it's something horrible so he can look good to his millions of women viewers.
