Hookah is flavored tobacco. You usually share it with a handful of people. You pass it around. They give you little plastic things to put on the end so that you only put your mouth on the little plastic thing.

You don't need to be a smoker to enjoy it. Its relaxing. I do it a few times a year.

shisha is the flavored tobacco you put in a hookah to smoke.

Back in my day we had to go to actual Middle-Eastern restaurants to smoke hookah. Now you have all these bros in their silly hookah bars.

Yeah. Being (part) Middle-Eastern, it's funny seeing it become a fad among the college crowd here. I think I first tried it out when I was around 13, but it's not enjoyable to me so I don't get it.

I never understood this hookah thing.

My smoker friend doesn't like it cuz he can smoke a cig instead.

I'm a non-smoker and didn't like it. It didn't relax me, wtf. It gave me a headache, that's it. I'd rather smoke pot and get high (which I did once).

A friend of mine at work used to be very into smoking a hookah. He was originally from Lebanon and it is culturally very commonly used in that area.

He stopped using it about 5 years ago though ... he contracted lung cancer from using it and died. There's a lesson in there somewhere ...

All you non smokers think that those of us that do smoke are ignorant to the dangers of it.
Trust me we are not, just happens to be that nicotine is the most addictive substance on this planet, probably even more then opiods.

If you got a headache when you first smoked pot then it was probably shitty stuff.
In any case truth of pot hands down is this, there are ppl who can smoke and ppl who cant smoke period. Some ppl flip out the first time they smoke and for some it takes years and for some they never flip out. Affects each individual differently.
I have chosen to not smoke pot for the time being due to the paranoia it was giving me. Didnt happen in my first 5 years of smoking but it creept up on me till it finally hit me in the head.

OP is either majorly stupid or supremely trolling...

But, since we're on the subject, Hookas are not designed for pot, and would be a wasteful way of smoking it. Actual marijuana buds never really made it to the middle east before modern times, but Hashish definitely did. Hash is concentrated marijuana. Basically, it's a dry good that could be put on the back of a pack horse and transported from India or China west along the silk road.

Consequently, there is a tradition for the very rich who could afford hashish to melt some of it and put it on shisha (tobacco), and smoke it in a hooka. I did this a couple times in college, because I had a friend with a Hookah and we had intermittent access to hash.

I've heard of people who've never smoked a day in their lives and still developed lung cancer.

So weird...

Hookas are the worst way to smoke tobacco. Not only do you have the tobacco, but you keep the tobacco lit with a small piece of COAL.

Life is indeed not fair. About 7 years ago I was diagnosed with a cancer related to smoking ... even though I do not smoke. I had a quick procedure and get examined once a year and have been free of it ever since.

You play the hand that you are dealt in life ...

Not even close, but it is pretty addictive. I smoked for 22 years and just stopped a month ago. I used the patches for about a week to break the habits, and then just stopped using the patches, never really felt anything close to withdrawl, but I have had a couple cigarettes in the last month, once a week or so me and my wife (she quit also) will have a smoke to remind us how fucking disgusting it is.

I just quit too, 12 days ago. I did not use a patch, gum or lozenge. It is very disgusting and I don't want to remind myself of how nasty it is.

Ok fine, it was just because we wanted a cigarette :p, but it was disgusting :)

I tried everything, gum( which made me have hiccups)
Patch (worked for month, then I started again)

I have managed to quit drinking (easy too, did it in one day and never looked back, in fact it disgusts me almost as much as cocaine) and smoking pot but cannot break the tobacco. Its imposible. I do not like the itchy cold turkey feeling, Id rather poison my lungs.

I think doing that is dangerous. It is too easy to fall back into the bad habit of smoking. I can't tease myself like that. Besides you are a smoker or you're not. There is no grey area with this for me. I quit and that is it. Those things are nasty to me now. They went from being important to me to meaning nothing to me in a matter of 2 weeks.

Adding on to what has been said here, since it is a water pipe it cools the smoke down and it is not nearly as harsh as cigarettes are. Thus, its mostly for non-smokers to smoke in groups. It can be fun sometimes.

This. I tried to smoke a cigarette, once. I couldn't do it, it was nasty as fuck, smelled horrible, just burned my lungs and throat and made me cough. Same with a cigar I tried once. But I've smoked a hookah maybe six or eight times at various gatherings and it was very easy to do. The shisha has a nice smell and it doesn't burn your lungs. I only got at all buzzed maybe once or twice from it, and it took a LOT of smoking (and simultaneous drinking), but it was okay. I didn't get addicted or anything.

Unless I am supposed to logically reason based on hookah pipe schematics that it would be an ineffective way to consume marijuana, I don't see anything stupid in my op.

See, I don't see it that way. If I go out once a year and have a beer, or on New Years Eve have a glass of champagne, am I a "drinker"? No, so if I have a single cigarette a year, or every couple months how would that make me a "smoker"? It doesn't. More what makes me a smoker is that passing moment where I really crave a smoke, happens about once every couple days, but passes pretty quickly.

It's a social method of smoking that uses a specialty tobacco mixture. I don't know about hipster, but it's kind of trendy atm. I'd try it, but I don't have any hookah cafes near me, and the cost to buy my own stuff is too high for a novelty.

trendy ATM?

hookah bars started popping up in the mainstream late 90's early 00's in SoCal.

Hookah is okay, my favorite part is blowing massive smoke rings. Chill way to blow a couple of hours.

Heh, a couple just opened up in the Midwest over the past two or three years. A lot of the Middle Eastern restaurants already had them for years prior to that. Always wanted to try, never did. Just smoked the reef in it once.

Being middle-eastern as well it's part of my culture. I've seen it spike in popularity over the last 15 years or so. Super common, obviously, in the middle east, also i'm pretty sure it's common in Europe.

Hookah bars are targeting the 18-20 yo college crowd. Old enough to smoke, too young to drink. Hookah bars are designed to separate these folks from their money in a bar-like atmosphere. Starbucks for tobacco.

Sadly this is true. I still enjoy hookah, but the places are generally filled with 18-20 year old. That doesn't really bother me much except when the place gets crowded and starts to feel like a high school.

I really enjoy hookah. My roommate has a ~3ft pipe that we use once or twice a month. For me (a non-cigarette smoker), the stuff kicks like a mule if you smoke it right. That said, it HAS to be terrible for you; my mouth is caked in sugar by the time we are finished.

When I smoked steady my pipe was double chambered and I packed them both with plenty of ice to keep that smoke cool. Also, if your mouth has debris (of any kind) in it after smoking then you guys aren't filtering properly or you're sucking way too hard.......
