Is Hitachi Hard Disk Good?

Hi based on everyone's opinion on my previous thread, I bought the Seagate. But now CompUSA has a very good deal on the Hitachi 160gb hard drive for $40 and I wonder I should get it instead of the Seagate. Can someone please advise if the Seagate has any advantage over the Hitachi? Thanks

Seagate has a five-year warranty on all their drives (as opposed to 3- or even 1-year for some manufacturers/models), which makes them a pretty good buy. In terms of overall brand reliability, all of the major HD manufacturers are pretty good these days (barring a few bad models, like the "Deathstar" IBM drives from a few years back)...
 
For 40 bucks who cares... All the drives have almost idetical performance and I think by now are all about as reliable as the others. If this drive has a 3 year warrenty one then go for it. Even if its just a 1 year its still only 40 bucks.
 
I like my Hitachi 7k250. Can't tell you about noise cause my computer with all the fans is relatively loud I guess, but it doesn't bother me.
 
Checkout Hitachi's website for the warranty length. You can go to that site via the link on NewEgg, which sells the same drive.

Hitachis are excellent drives. If you look at the benchmarks at storagereview.com, you will see that the SATA 7K250 Hitachi models from 80Gig and up are VERY fast, and in some cases only second to a Raptor.
 
@ $40 bucks for a 160gb drive it doesn't matter what brand it is, its a good deal. HGST has made good drives since the 120GXP series, the 7k250 was the top performing ATA drive for awhile too. and the 7k400 is the bigest and one of the fastest 7.2k rpm drives money can buy, at this point I wouldn't have any qualms about buying an HGST drive. (although I own mostly Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor in that order)
 
Finally I got both the Seagate and the Hitachil as they are offering both for $40 after rebates. So now I need to decide which one I should keep? Any comment now?

I didn't read whatever thread you had going before so If the Hitachi is larger and has better performance keep it. it's a good brand and I think someone said they took over IBM's disk drive branch or whatever. anyway, I doubt there'll be a huge difference. $40 for 160gb is a hot deal worthy of the hot deals section!

Sorry ChicagoPCGuy, at storagereview.com, I could not find the benchmark for Hitachi 160Gb PATA. I can only do a head to head comparison on the 7k250 they listed which is the SATA version and the result against Seagate Barracuda 160Gb PATA shows the Hitachi is much faster (given it's SATA) but the Seagate is much quieter and cooler.

What do you guys think? Keep the Seagate for it's reliability or the Hitachi for it's possible speed performance advantage? Thanks!
 
Hitachis used to be made by IBM. From what I understand and have read Hitachi is a decent brand. Each brand has its flaws, and like someone said, damnit, it's only $40.00 for 160GB of space. Damn good deal.
 
you're somewhat correct there... IBM basically sold off their storage division to HGST. Seems that after IBM stopped making their own drives, the problems went away. The "Deathstar" drives are a thing of the past.
 
i'm still using my deathstar and it has been a fantastic drive. don't know where the bad word started w/these drives. get the hitachi. jesus, $40 is CHEAP for 160GB. i remember 10MB drives at $1000!
 
I don't usually keep a hard drive in my main computer much longer than 3 years anyway... I tend to outgrow them or want something faster. So a 5 year warranty vs. a 3 year warranty isn't that big a deal to me. But if you plan to keep it for more than 3 years, by all means, get the Seagate.
 
The only differences between the Desk top IDE drives today is a few decibels in sound and heat dissipation. All new one's come with 8 MB cache. There are a few that sport 16 MB cache, but the performance difference from the ones with 8MB cache is very little to none. Mostly because of simple math. 8MB cache drives has 4x as much as their ancestors did, 16MB cache drives have only 2 times as much as 8MB cache drives. It's just that 2MB cache drives had so little to begin with, 8MB cache actually made somewhat of a difference.

So someone who has 8 hard drives in their tower case would be a little privy to how much heat they give out. And to someone who wants a super-silent desk top, the few db's in sound difference may matter. Usually there comes a very small performance hit depending what applications you use if you decide to go the super silent route. The difference though between these new hard drives are so minute though, it doesn't make much a difference when you click "Check-Out".

Hi. Yeah, I think the 7K250 250gig version is all you have to compare with over there. The 160 Gig size is the same model they tested, just with one less platter. The speed should be more or less the same, so you can compare apples to apples here. The Hitachis can sometimes be somewhat louder and they are definitely a little hotter, but they are really fast. I use the Hitachis all the time in builds, and I serious would consider the Hitachi.

 
Hitachi 7K250's are fine drives IMO, I buy Seagate these days due to their 5 year warranty, but if I got a good deal on a HGST drive I wouldn't pass it up.
