I hear different opinions on this, so of course I need ATOT to weigh in.

depends on what you mean by bad practice... does it put extra wear on the clutch? yes.

Nah, it's good to ride the clutch. I helps keep the clutch plates nice and clean.

It's only bad if you don't like spending money to replace the clutch twice as often as you need to.

what is the alternative...dropping it in neutral and stepping on the brake?

I can't believe anyone who knows that there's an alternative to using the clutch that way would even ask the question. Of course it's going to diminish the life of your clutch...

On that note, you know what I haven't smelled in a while?

Burned rubber.

Cars come equipped with brakes for this reason.
Why would you overuse the clutch?

Um, riding the clutch as in having the clutch fully depressed on rolling down a hill?

I do that. I will stop if it is bad for the mechanics. I never thought it was bad.

what is the alternative...dropping it in neutral and stepping on the brake?
And I am also interested in knowing the alternative. Is said technique the alternative?

That's not riding the clutch. He's talking about when you're stopped on an uphill grade and you slip the clutch to keep the car from rolling backwards.

That's what the handbrake is for dumbass.

1. Put car in first with foot on clutch, foot on brake, pull up handbrake with button depressed.
2. Take foot off brake, and rev the engine slightly, all while releasing the e-brake and releasing the clutch.

No extra clutch wear.

Yep, it takes practice but this works. The steeper the hill the faster you have to do this. But hopefully you are used to "feathering" the clutch/gas pedals, except now you have to do it with the handbrake too. If you do it right you will not roll back at all.

This is only a PITA with cars that have handbrakes in bad spots. My civic and integra are pretty easy. My old manual tempo didn't have a handbrake though :( (broke)

actually i'd consider anyone who still needs to use the handbrake to be a grade A stick-noob.

that is a lot of work, why not just use the regular brakes?
