is high end RAM worth it?

Hey there, I'm looking at building a new PC soon. I am trying to decide what type of memory to put in. It's mostly going to be for gaming. I was thinking a Athlon 64 3200+ with an MSI K8N Neo motherboard.

Does the more expensive RAM like Kingston Hyper X or higher end Corsair RAM make that much difference if I don't plan to overclock? It just seems like a lot of money if it's not going to make much difference.

thanks in advance

Nope, not worth it. Get a couple sticks of 512MB Mushkin Green for $158 at Newegg.

I'd suggest grabing some cheap PC3500 or 3700 if your overclocking, otherwise the afore mentioned suggestions are good.

Wow, thanks, I guess that settles it. I don't have access to Mushkin, but I can get Corsair Value Select, or Crucial for pretty good prices.

thanks again!

Good decision, I'm running Corsair, but if I'd pick Crucial stuff (I got a hot deal on Corsair Value Select a month ago)

Crucial has been very good to me,I bought 2 x 512 meg stick of cas3 pc3200 & it runs at cas2.5 at 200mhz & 250mhz at cas3 with 2.8v . yes you read right 250mhz (ddr500) .

Tom's Hardware did benchmarks at the begining of the year, and like everyone's saying, it turns out there's very little difference. 7% max between ultra expensive 2-2-2 RAM on a Pentium 4 system, and only 4% max on an Athlon 64 (thanks to it's integrated memory controller).

Nah, like everyone else said, as long as your arent overclocking. And even if you did some light overclocking a good branded ram will give you some room normally. I am using the ValueSelect Corsair PC3200 and they are at least good up to 220mhz in my machine. So save the cash and get mushkin or corsair, both will perform well.

I noticed on my AthlonXP that going from CAS 2 to 2.5 is a big difference. I had to overlock my 2500+ from stock to 2ghz to make the faster ram with worse timings perform better.
