The newer players now directly support transfer and playback of MP3 files, so I am thinking about getting one. Anyone has one and would like to comment on them?

Not anymore...the NetMDs transfer by USB with a max of 30 some odd songs per disc. and the new Hi-MD hold one gig, and the old discs are backwards compatible and will hold 300mbs iirc.
also the Hi-MD will have the ability to transfer files, word, mpeg, whatever....
