Is Hendrix as good as he's hyped up to be?

IMO he was one of the most brilliant musicians of the 20th century. In terms of pure technical skill, he has been surpassed, but he had a stunningly creative mind, and advanced the art of playing the guitar in a truly innovative way. I don't think there has been another musician since who has made similar innovations. Jimi Hendrix was a genius . . .

 Agreed!

I like his music alot but as a pure guitar player there are many that are better.

pure guitar player ? wtf is that ?

I should have said technical... someone who knows lots of theory aka a classical guitar player. I still think he is great though.

You cannot say he's not a technically sound guitar player because he didn't try to play that type of music. Hendrix probably could have done anything with an AX if he tried. Lets see Steve Vai play loaded with heroin and see what happens 🙂

See Ywingie. Soulless

negative. you cant call any music souless/emotionless. listen to Crying off the Trilogy album, black star, icarus dream suite, etc. off rising force. yngwie gets pegged with being a sterile plyaer because they cant see past how fast he is on the fretboard. but hes far from a fret wanker

not to mention, he arranges his own classical strings bits for his albums, a lot of times rivaling full orchestras.

..decades after his death his music still shines and sounds fresh compared to the mediocre strummers of today..he's truely a study of immense improvisational talent that is so rare in somebody so young. It's amazing how much he was able to accomplish in so short a life.

Not even close. For one thing he can't sing _for crap_.
Either can 90% of musicians out there.
At least hendrix can actually play the instrument.

That, I can agree with.

I don't think he was ever considered much of a technical guitarist. He's more sloppy but it adds a certain character to it that became his trademark.

I guess "technical" can mean many things to many people, but he was certainly one of the most technically proficient players of his generation, and could do things that few or none other could. IMO, for example, Eric Clapton might have (narrowly) bested Jimi in sheer mechanical skill, but has never exhibited anywhere near the emotion and musical innovation that JH did.

Yes. He had a natural ear for tones and harmonies (he was never actually taught these), he could play with either hand, and his type of sound had never been done before

I agree with everything except other artists making similar innovations. There are some truly amazing guitarists as you described Hendrix. Not exactly the most technical or theory based, but changed the way the guitar is played, most definetly.

Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Mad Season... Seattle music rules

Actually Hendrix was a studio guitar player before he had a solo career. I believe he played in James Brown band too.

i am often called a blasphemer for saying this... but i dont think he was that spectacular.

he was an great guitar player, but there are other i like better. and as far as singing/songwriting, he did nothing for me.

There's a bit in Voodoo Chile which lasts about 3 seconds (about 0'50 into the song) which gives me the chills every time I hear it, nothing technically amazing, in fact I can't explain what is so great about it, but it's still the best thing to ever come out of a guitar, amazing! All IMO of course, probably nobody agrees.

One compliment I heard about Hendrix was that he was one with his guitar. Reminds me of Carlos Santana. Whether you like their style or not, there isn't a higher level of genious than that.

Brilliant musician. Not a great voice, but (like Dylan and Neil Young) his expression overcame his technical deficiencies as a singer. Little Wing is a perfectly understated guitar song. The Wind Cries Mary is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Voodoo Child gives me chills.

I know exactly what you mean. In the song "Young Lust" by Pink Floyd, theres a part in the solo at the end where he goes "HUH!" that does the same thing to me 🙂
