Is Hendrix as good as he's hyped up to be?

I'm told you need to see him playing to really appreciate his brilliance...but it seems to come through fine through his music to me...

Purple Haze has gotta be one of my favourites, and i love his version of "All along the watchtower"

IMO he was one of the most brilliant musicians of the 20th century. In terms of pure technical skill, he has been surpassed, but he had a stunningly creative mind, and advanced the art of playing the guitar in a truly innovative way. I don't think there has been another musician since who has made similar innovations. Jimi Hendrix was a genius . . .

Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen are mythical guitar Gods in my opinion. Very different styles but both keep me coming back to listen to their classics time and time again. It's a shame Hendrix died so young and his works are limited to a short time period.

My dad got to see Hendrix in concert way back when.

 

His live stuff is 023840239840982390409823904823904238409x better than his recorded works.

Creative and skilled as both guitarist and songwriter.

I actually prefer Concrete Blonde's cover of "Little Wing" to his original. James Mankey makes the guitar even more lyrical and Johnette Napolitano's smoky voice is sweeter, but he created the song they just followed his lead.

I really enjoy Voodoo Child... one of my all time favorites of his.... same with Foxy Lady... He was amazing, but its the drugs that killed him. I wonder what stuff he would have come out with if he had not died, I'd probably be going to Hendrix concerts whenever they were around me....

I should have said technical... someone who knows lots of theory aka a classical guitar player. I still think he is great though.

it doesnt matter about his technique, or how many NPS he could play, thats all fret wanking. he was amazing, especially for his time, he changed rock and roll guitar

I don't know if you've ever listened to Robin Trower, but one of my friends thinks that's what Hendrix would have sounded similar to if he'd lived a bit longer and mellowed out a little. I can see the comparison.

Yes...definitely. He revolutionized what could be done with an electric guitar and opened new territory in which later guitarists were able to explore more fully.
