<< When I have kids, if Im fortunate enough to make decent money like I plan to, I wont mind buying them a car. Granted it will be a STARTER car, like something decent, nothing spectacular. But to have the car, theyre gonna have to get a part time job, pay insurance, and get B or better grades. Sounds fair to me. >>
I don't think teenagers should have to work during HS. My parents gave me their hand me down, a 1993 Dodge Intrepid, and paid the insurance on it. I worked one semester in HS, sophomore year, and I found it very difficult to keep my grades at a high level (yes, they were all above Bs, but you need to make A's to get into a good college now adays). I attend a top private school in Dallas (well thankfully I will be graduating soon - only 7 more days left!) and this year, taking 4 AP classes, I would have found it impossible to have a job an keep my grades up. Insurance is very high on a teenager (espically a male), so luckily for me (and well, all of my friends) our parents are willing to pay for it.
Now if I had attended public school, taking regular (non-honors/AP classes), I wouldn't have found it very difficult to both work and go to school, and make high grades. I guess the question is where do you draw the line between one's studies and having a job?
I wouldn't give my kids everything they would want, in no way; in fact, if they wanted any extra spending money (I would, probably like my parents have done) encourage them to get a job during the summer months. But balancing school (espically a challenging curriculum) and work is a lot to expect from most people.
