Isn't DTS just a digital audio compression format that is used to transfer more than 2 channels through an interface that normally supports only stereo? Do you need that?

No, DTS is an ancient fully multichannel codec.
This looks to just convert to DTS for output over S/PDIF. Pointless because you're likely not going to be hooked up to a DTS receiver, and even if you were it would be better to just use LPCM.
