I'm a golfer. Not only do I not take grass for granted, I admire grass and can tell many varieties apart. A golf course plays MUCH differently depending on type of grass uses. Some types the ball sits up, some it nestles down. Some are soft and some are wiry and tough. Some putt very neutrally and some influence the lines of putts depending on the direction they grow, the time of day or the position of the sun. Some stand up to cold weather and die in high heat while others are dormant in cold weather and grow great in heat. When you're standing over a 10 footer to win the match, you damn well better take into account whether it's bent, bermuda, zoysia or poa annua.
