Is Google becoming worthless?

Conky

Lifer
It seems now that every time I use it that it brings me less and less relevant links and more "sponsored" links. Sometimes I just want to find some information and not be sold something.

Does anybody have any good search engine alternatives?

It's the best right now, though it is going downhill. I think this might be partially due to stemming, but I'm not sure. It's also probably because of stupid webmasters that program to get hits, instead of programming for content's sake.

Those stupid search results that just take you to other "search" sites piss me off. It's not Google's fault that every idiot has found a way to try to exploit the Internet these days. I miss the time not too long ago when the Internet wasn't so commercialized. 🙁

Google results have definately worsened regardless of whose to blame.

There really are no good alternatives.

Google is becoming less useful, yes. Whenever I have a question about something, Google just takes me to forums where someone asked the question and never got it answered. Either that or it's some out of date link.

For specific searches, it still does a good job.

Are we using the same google? The sponsored links show us seperate from the results in the right hand column for my searchs I think......

Many websites are taking advantage of google's inner workings by creating lots of dummy sites that link to each other. This degrades the quality of search results. There are a lot of other problems also.

Yeah I tend to agree that a lot of the "top" search results are garbage... but you really can't blame Google, since it's the web designers that are screwing things up...

I think a lot of it is simply spam. I mean, I was searching google for plans on how to make a poker table, and 99% of the links went to general online poker sites that simply had all sorts of key words listed. I remember the good old days when only porn did that, and now normal searches are falling into the same trap.

All the searches i do, i can't ever remember even once being sent to a site specifically by google to be sold something. What are you searching that this is happening so often?

exactly and I never click on one of those sponsored links anyway. It's not like they put some sponsored links into the real results.

Yea I was talking to crazyfool the other day. He mentioned that he made a search for genital warts and yeast infections. Google sent him to a pay per view gay pr0n site! Apparently it wasn't a very good site as they wouldn't take his Discover card! :Q
