Companies like IBM, Intel, and Microsoft dwarf Google in R&D budgets.

There is nothing new about what google is doing, and at some point in a lot of company's history, they were in the exact same position.

Google didnt even invent Adsense, pay per click advertising was around years before Google started doing it.

And why is it working for them, and not so well for anyone else?

They're using the Seinfeld business model: they don't sell anything and get paid for it. How cool is that?

Well, can anyone name a worthy competitor in the search engine business?

That is not a definition of a monoply. It becomes a monopoly when you use your market share to purposely prevent compeition.

differing opinions aside, google didnt even invent most of the stuff they do... including (which you seem to have missed) thier main source of revenue.

My point is many companies have enjoyed the same position google is in now. Before google Yahoo and MSN had both been the #1 trafficed networks in the world, and at one point AOL held the eyeballs of over half the internet audience.

Google is not doing anything amazing that dozens of companies havent already done on tht internet, and even before the internet. Go back to the orgins of TV networks, Radio, periodical printing.... the same thing over and over in different mediums..

OK, so they're not doing anything different, yet they're making so much money that even Microsoft is afraid of them.

I'm going to keep doing everything the same as all of our competitors at my job, and hopefully I win the random success lottery they must be holding so I can become a bajillionaire. That's what you're saying, right? They haven't done anything innovative, so there's no logical reason as to why they're so successful?

lulz, google isn't a monopoly on online advertising. That's what their company is, not a search engine company.

Jesus man, pay attention. I'm not arguing that Google isnt kicking serious ass at what they do right now. But to think that they are the first company ever to do what they are doing is just plain stupid. They arent doing anything new, they just happen to be the CURRENT best at what they do. Plenty of companies throughout history have had the edge google currently has, and plenty more will in the future. Even speaking of JUST the internet age, there were plenty of "darlings" before Google came along (Netscape, AOL, Yahoo to name a few). And someday google will no longer be the current darling and the world will have moved on to the next one.

 I think you keep changing the meaning of your posts to make yourself look knowledgeable about the subject.

I think I'll just back away now and let you have your way.

You keep making jabs but I can't find your beliefs in a single concise statement.

Do you believe google is a monopoly?
