Is going from a 9600 XT to a 6600 GT a worthwhile upgrade?

What kind of settings would I be able to play games at?

I currently play HL2 on 1024x768, x2 AA, x16 AF, everything maxed, plays fine on 50+ fps.

I play F.E.A.R on 800x600 on medium - high with 40 fps average.

I play BF2 on 1024x768 medium - high on 40 fps average.

Would the card be able to hold me over until dx10 by playing most games on 1024x768 on medium?

yer but i would have gone to x800gto ... its only $40 extra and you could get a GTO model. otherwise i would recommend 6800gs agp

note: I am from New Zealand and prices are very different.

You can find all the prices here : http://www.pricespy.co.nz/cat_16.html

I don't want to spend over $400 NZD

Edit: I have an AGP slot but for $100 I can buy a mobo which supports PCI-E so if there is a good PCI-E card for under $300 I can get that aswell

I would think it better to stick with the 9600XT... it's still a capable card.

For PCI-E, 6800GS. For AGP, 6800GS. But that might be a bit high for you...

9800xt is about 2x faster than 9600Pro. 6600GT is about 20% faster than 9800xt. So it'll be a decent upgrade. But I still think you'll be better off waiting for 6800GS AGP.

i wouldn't bother, i had a 9550@XT speeds while my 9800 pro was being replaced with my current 6600GT, and while it was nice to get some AA and res bumps it wasn't like going from my gf4 mx to my 9800 pro 😉 Hang in there and go to an asrock agp/pci-e mobo and then get a decent pci-e card in the future 🙂
