edit: ok.. for clarification: i have no cell phone, i am an engineering student, i am going to drexel university (entire campus is wifi).. as far as it goes right now, i don't even use my hw book much in high school (although i'll be considerably more busy at college, i'm sure)

I've had an Ipaq 1910 since the day they came out... which how long has it been now? 2? 3 years? Geez i don't even remember. I almost always have it on me, and NEVER put it in a case or 'screen protector'... just tossed it in my pockets, usually try not to have it in the same pocket as my keys (but still happens quite often). A little scratched, and my stylus has broken, but i still use it. I could use an upgrade, but not too sure if it's really needed just yet. I would LOVE to have a VGA screen and something with bluetooth...

If within your budget, VGA PDA phones should be surfacing.

Sounds sweet. I'll make it be within my budget if I have to. 😀

Get the Treo!

Link? Cost? (Is it GSM?)

i have a siemens sx56 pocketpc (XDA) phone and use it all the time because it's my phone. if you could get something other than a PDA as a gift, then get the something else. mine is okay, it's kinda useful, but not lifesaving like my laptop is

Not worth the money. If you want, get a cheap Clie and a keyboard for notes, but other than that, can you think of anything you'd need a PDA for?

GSM or CDMA

The treo 650 will set you back $550 without a new activation....the treo 600 is much less. The 650 has a better screen and BT...

I'll probably just wait for whatever devices will come out in the next few months (VGA screen would be awesome - ideally I'd like to be able to a little basic web browsing). Well, that plus my current phone works just fine anyway. 😛

have an x30, it was awesome (if your school has wifi) with the built in antenna I was able to browse and reference anywhere I want -- although I didn't just whip it out anywhere (no reason to look like a geek in front of the ladies)

I take notes on an axim, works fine. I don't use it for anything else really beyond that and a little web surfing, and I doubt you will either.
I would like a 12" powerbook or thinkpad though.

I got a Dell Axim x30 when I came to college this year, and I barely use it. The thing has seriously not left its cradle in 4 months.

I use my thinpad t42 way more than I use the PDA, so I suggest putting the gift money towards a laptop, if you do not already have them.

I rarely use mine. I got my Palm T3 for free so it's no big deal. I just need something for phone numbers and my cellphone works better for that.

It's kind of a pain for writing down assignments. If you don't have a keyboard, it's more trouble than it's worth using the virtual keyboard...and if you do have a keyboard, you feel like you're carrying way too much stuff...

I use mine to surf the internet (via my cell phone) when I'm not at a computer so this might help when you're studying in the library or on campus. For appointments, I try to gather my thoughts the night before of what I have to do the next day and input them using the PC software, then just sync them.

I looked at phone/PDA's but when I went to the Cingular store, I realized that was just too much machine to hold next to my face...

They are like most tech toys... You will use it for the first few weeks, then realize that a notepad and pencil is 1000 times cheaper, faster and convenient.
