Is GC68 the best quiet Athlon fan?

Hi,

I'm looking for a really quiet Athlon fan and from reading recent posts it seems like GC68 is the go. My question is: how does Alpha 8045 compare to it? What's the best quiet fan you can get, 8045, GC68 or something else entirely (ignoring the price for a minute)? I'm not going to be overclocking, but I do want as little noise as possible.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Evgeny

If you aren't overclocking, the GC68 is the way to go. Real quiet, good cooling.

But if you are overclocking, the Alpha is still one of the best heatsinks out there. It is quiet too though, just way more expensive.

Since price is no issue I would go for Alpha 8045 and Papst NGL 12dB fan. It's most definetly not a cost efficient solution but I dont think there is any way to get more quiet cpu cooling using air.

The GC68 is obviously the winner in terms of price/performance for quiet HSF's. Forgetting the price, though, an 8045 would stomp it flat with the same fan, and offer similar performance with a much quieter fan. Not that the stock fan on the GC68 is loud at all, but the Alpha will work well with fans that are almost inaudible.

The GC68 will fit in a lot of places where the Alpha wouldn't have a chance, though, and is a terrific bargain.

It's pretty simple.

Overclocking: Alpha Pal 8045

Not Overclocking and Want quiet: GC-68

Though there are a lot of other options out there this just simplifies things 😉!

That is a good cooler? Are you guys serious? I've seen this heatsink before (in a few pics), but this is the first time I've heard anyone say anything good about it :Q

IMO, the best quiet AMD HSF would be the Alpha PAL8045 with a nice fan. The Papst 80mm comes to mind, but there are many other quiet (albeit low CFM fans) out there. My bro has an Adda fan that I ripped from a Lian Li case and it cools just fine. It all comes down to what your ambient temp is 😉

Ignore price??? Are you sure???

Why not do some peltier or waterblock?

Seriously though, the Alpha is a good heatsink but when you add a papst fan and blah blah, your price can go up to 40 bux while the GC68 costs only $13.

FlowerMan: Actually. It is a decent cooler. If your not overclocking or not in a hot enviroment, the GC-68 will do you just fine. No need for everyone to have an alpha. There are people who keep everything at stock speeds.

Again, i would perfer the Alpha over it anyday, but it also costs a bit more. 😉.

haven't tried the alpha, but the gc68 is very quiet with the stock fan. 28dba fan, only 2500 rpm, so it's not high pitched and whiny. for 13 bucks with free artic alumina, it can't be beat at that price level 🙂

From reviews I'm reading, the new Thermalright AX-7 is more cost efficient and even beats the Alpha in terms of cooling...or at least matches it.

Your system will reach a point where the major noise of the system will not be the heatsink.

In my system, I have an alpha 8045 with a panaflo L1A, an Enermax whisper 350W PSU. The loudest thing in my system is the maxtor 7200 which gives out a steady highpitched whing~ sound.

I was running a GC68 before but the noise difference between the alpha and GC68 was unnoticeable since the hard drive was still the loudest thing in my system even then.

Thanks very much for all your help, guys! I've looked around for places to buy either one of those and I guess which one I buy will come down to which one I can find here in Australia. The lowest price I found for the Alpha, shippied, is $A118 ($US60). That's just the heatsink, no fan. As for the GC68, I'm getting the impression that no-one here has ever heard of it! If I have to order it from US, the cost of shipping will probably bring it close to the Alpha. Does anyone know of a US shop that could ship this to Australia cheaply (by USPS?) or, unlikely as it is, an Australian shop that might have it?

Thanks again,

Evgeny

SVC compucycle shipis via usps. I ordered a cd form AU to New Jersey USA, and that only cost $2 so shipping shouldn't be all that bad for you. Email them and check it out!

is price is of no object, go with WATERCOOLING!!! or a peltier 🙂, that's always the way to go.

Otherwise, the GC68 will suffice

just ordered the gc68 from svc (thanks in part to this post!) yesterday afternoon and it shipped out the same day. can't wait to replace the much too loud coolermaster dp5 6131c

Well if you can't find the GC68 down there you could look for the thermalright AX-7. It cools better than the alpha, uses 80 mm fans, and should be cheaper than the alpha. Good luck.
