Not really, it's sugar and salts that's all. Still better than soda. Not as good as water.

2g is hardly a "crapload". An apple has around 16g of sugars, 8oz of gatorade is around 14g. And at least with an apple your are getting 4-5 grams of fiber along with it.

I believe the number is 13g for a 125g apple. If you haven't noticed, you can't find an apple that only weighs a 125 grams unless it's non genetically modified and from some local farmers market.

It's liquid sugar that's designed to be absorbed instantaneously. It's very bad to consume it while inactive. It's only advantage over soda is that it isn't so much fructose, which doesn't matabolize very well in large quantities.

The fiber an other material that apples have completely changes the way it is absorbed and it's impact on the human body. In this situation, "sugar" is not inheritely evil by any means.

And the other material in the apple has compounds in it shown to be very beneficial to health. It's extremely potent antioxidants (not Vitamin C or any other vitamins) increases the longetivity of every cell in your body. It decreases the risk of cancer, and heart disease.

But do you regularly eat apples instead of drinking liquids?

As everyone has said, it's much better than soda (but then again, what isn't?) However, it's still mostly sugar water and contains empty calories so unless you have a legitimate reason to drink it (like you're about to go workout or just got back), water is still a better choice. As mentioned, it causes your blood sugar to spike and encourages inculin production which is generally seen as not a good thing but still, given the choice between gatorade and just about any other flavored beverage, I'd stick with gatorade. As for Crystal Light, all the artificial sweeteners make me wary. They always slough the skin off my tongue and make it all raw so I don't trust them.

This happened to my brother-in-law. Use to drink lots of the stuff, and ended up with a kidney stone. But I guess it would also depend on the person.

Also I wonder why you friend got stones for drinking too much? Usually it is the opposite, genetics?

I'm not sure. That's what the doctor told him. Now he's more prone to kidney stones I guess too. He got them again pretty recently.

A lot of sugar and a lot of artificial color. What do you think? It isn't as bad as pop ( ;) You're from the East coast right?), but it is still not good for you in large amounts.

Who cares though, you are young, and it won't kill you. But yes, the healthiest thing is to drink mostly water and non-artificial things and to drink and eat variety.

Yes, I'm from Chicago. :) I know I'm young, but I want to avoid health problems later on I guess. Regardless, I'll start drinking more water.

After looking at your photos, I honestly can say that you SHOULD lay off the Gatorade. You don't look like a skinny little underweight kid that can ingest that stuff by the gallon without consequences. I think your girlfriend is trying to tell you that you don't need the calories. I'm not trying to be a b!tch, it's just honestly not good for you.

Edit: You might consider looking at all things you eat and drink in terms of whether the good outweighs the bad. I'm teaching my kids to differentiate "food" from "treat" and teaching them that anything you regularly eat or drink must be in the "food" category. Treats are a "once in awhile" thing, not something you eat daily. Treats are things that give you little to no nutritional benefit compared to the bad aspects, like lots of sugars or fats. Foods must provide you with a nutritional benefit that outweighs the bad aspects. Gatorade provides you with nothing but empty calories, with no real nutritional benefit beyond a little potassium. Eliminate the empty calories by either drinking plain water or find a sugar-free substitute if you just can't make yourself drink it unflavored.

Sugary drinks are bad. That includes supposed good things such as gatorade and juice. Gatorade is great if you're replenishing your electrolytes and energy while working out, but it's just going to be a source of rapidly absorbed sugar for you...this spikes your blood sugar, leading you to overeat later. It also can lead to insulin resistance and then everyone's favorite type II diabetes. Now, I'm not saying that amount of gatorade is going to make you diabetic, but you can probably prevent it pretty easily.

FYI. Fruit juice is loaded with sugar. It does have some vitamins and antioxidants that are very good for you, but all that sugar is bad. Eating a fruit itself is good because it's got fiber to help slow the digestion down, and it will have less sugar than a typical amount of juice you'd drink.

I can't stomach Gatorade...especially when I'm cycling. I drink Cytomax on the bike but never otherwise. Usually it's just plain water for me.
