is fx 4100 worth it!!??

from the above i make out that most of the people prefer i3 over fx...but i3 is dual core(no multithreading counted) and costs more along a good mobo...for lesser i can get a quad core overclockable cpu...for 20$ more than the i3 i can get even the 6 cored fx 6100...
and about power i dont think i need to worry with my cooler master thunder 500w psu,a gtx550ti and just one wd sata hdd!!!do i...

so i think fx 6100 is the way to go isnt it!!!wat say!!!
 
For some CPU heavy workloads,FX6100 is a better option even at stock vs stock. Then you can OC it (like xbitlabs did, they got ~4.4Ghz with 1.335V-a 0.15V over stock). Once you OCed it it will be massively faster than i3 in CPU heavy tasks and won't trail as much in single thread stuff (but still will be somewhat slower though). In games, FX OCed can be competitive with i3. The downside to it is power draw,so if you don't care about that aspect then FX is a better chip.
 
when overclocking keep in mind that you might need a more expensive MB/cooling,
with the i3 you can always get away with a $50 MB and stock cooling,
when you overclock the FX 6100 this might not be the case.
 
Well if he doesn't touch the Vcore he won't raise the power draw that much. Things get out of control with FX chips when you go for the Vcore in order to squeeze that little extra to get over 4.5Ghz. I'd expect that 95W rated FX6100,when OCed to 4Ghz, will be drawing around 110W or 15% more power vs stock 6100 (the linear increase in frequency results in close to linear increase in power draw while Vcore is @ stock). So it's not an issue if he doesn't mess with voltages and he can use a "budget" board.

PS 95W FX6100 has average clock of 3.6Ghz(3.3-3.9Ghz freq. range @ stock). OCing it to 4Ghz on stock voltage will raise the clock (from that average) by ~12% and in turn the power will raise by around the same amount. If he changes the Vcore though, power will scale with square of the voltage (Crude approximation of dynamic power : P=f*C*V^2).

I would wait for the PileDriver to be released next week and then decide. As of now i would go for the FX6100 and OC to 4GHz, nothing can compare with it at $109,99 😉


Sorry, but US NCIX is one of the last places I'd buy anything. Charging me 3% of my total to provide the ability to have a 30-day return for DOA product? I'll pass.

And need to spend what, 30$ extra on an aftermarket cooler? :colbert:
 
the thing is i am not in favour of overclocking the cpu too much....leave aside voltage tweaking..coz where i live is a very humid and hot place with outside summer temperatures soaring upto 45 degrees celsius...though my room has an ac but still i wont b overclocking.....



the main thing is that i would hav a nice 6-core cpu....and the fact dat getting an i3 dual core for the same price...dats a no-no...i couldve waited to collect more cash and go for a quad i5,but since i have serious bottleneck prob,i need to get a cpu and dat too fast!!

but do u think 500w cooler master thunder could handle fx 6100??no oc!!

A FX6100 will be slower than a FX4170 in gaming and alot of other tasks.

that's where OC comes...
if you can OC the 6100 to around 4GHz without a huge vcore increase (and without expending a lot of money with cooling/MB), it should be a clear winner, as fast for ST and much faster for MT.
 
Why do people always recomend overclocking for people asking what to buy?
It might be easy for a technical person, but most people that ask for advice on what CPU to buy, I'd doubt if they even entered the BIOS, let alone select the proper settings/stress test for hours/monitor power draws and temperatures through different programs/change settings again because successful o/c on the first try just ain't happening.
Why do you assume that NON-tech people, that only want to insert their CPU & cooler in mobo and power on, want that headache? Are you personaly going to make up for them for the potential Data Loss/Power bill/Temperatures?

In case of FX6100, the overly complicated procedure is: Download AMD Overdrive=>CPU section=> Choose multiplier =>select 20x instead of 16.5=> Profit. No other changes are needed,most if not all FX cpus can work at 4Ghz with stock Vcore. Downside is that stock CPU cooler may get loud under full core(s) load.

PS FX6100 is faster CPU in encoding than i3,so no OC is needed.
 
I'm getting ready to replace a computer lab full of Circa 2006 Semprons and debated between i3's and FX4100's. In the end the 4100's will cost me less out of my limited budget and should provide more longevity with newer software. I understand power usage will be slightly higher, but power doesn't come from my budget and is a non issue in the winter since the computer lab heats itself 🙂
 
Not if you need best quality of your videos in which case quick sync cannot rival pure CPU encoding.
 
I can't wait to see what the new FX processors can do because ive always been an AMD fan 🙂
They can do the same as old ones,just up to 15% faster 🙂. No need to wait for reviews 😛. Also they may OC slightly better so profit there also. Price is what is most interesting thing right now: around 200$ for 8350( or 190e). FX8320 which is 3.5/4Ghz part should be around 180$,a bit cheaper than 8150 is now.
 
Gosh this is what always makes things confusing and prices high.

There is literally like 30 processor names and processors for AMD. Im not a AMD person, last I know is Athlon X4 and Phenom X4 I understand. but now they have 40 names and soo man choices. Why not make computing a simple thing.
