You would not believe how many more FS DVDs are sold compared to WS. I only watch WS movies, but I know what gets sold. The FS outnumbers the WS sold by a HUGE margin.

I don't have a link. All I have to do is check the sales at my store. Of course I can only vouch for the store I work at, but it's unbelievable. (I work at a Wal-Mart Supercenter) We sell a LOT of DVDs. They even come in this way... we get at least 50% more FS copies of movies than we do WS. That number may be higher, it's a rough estimate.

T3 is a special case. So are some kubrick movies. Those movies are shot in 4:3 and then clipped for the theatres, instead of shot in widescreen and clipped for 4:3. Fortunately I don't own T3 and I don't believe I had a choice for kubrick movies, so I never had to choose with the psychological effect of widescreen over the reality of 4:3 originals.

My local Blockbuster carries nothing but widescreen. I've never had a problem finding widescreen versions of the movies that I want, usually at Walmart (that is, assuming the movie was shot in widescreen).

That's skewed. Walmart is one of the sole reasons that studios manufacture FS DVDs. When new DVD customers purchase discs from Walmart only to discover and complain about "black bars", Walmart turns up the pressure on studios to release FS versions rather than educate the consumer on what those "black bars" are. Many Walmarts used to carry FS versions exclusively a few years ago. That has changed over the years, but I would not doubt that Walmart accounts for most FS version sales.
