is formating a hard drive the same as writing zeroes to it?

just curious. I usually just do a clean format when it's time to reinstall, but I was just wondering if I should write zeroes to my hard drive instead

Nope.

To write zeroes to a drive, you have to do a "low level" format. This can be done with a specific program, or some BIOS will have it available. Be warned, as it takes a while with bigger drives and you will have to repartition the drive with fdisk (or disk druid, whatever).

Since I have an IBM drive, I'm gonna use their utility to write zeroes to it. I've done it before on my friend's comp. The wait is crazy, but I don't mind, and either way i'm gonna have to repartition.
