Is Fleabag an ass or is this guy an ass?

That's more information than many people put in Craigslist ads. He lists the mileage and transmission type, which many people don't, and even lists recent service items.

KBB for a DX with those miles is $2,345 in "good" condition while an LX is $2,525, both assuming my own (Seattle) ZIP code; I imagine that things are a little more expensive in the SF bay area.

Craigslist limits posters to 4 pictures it's not unusual for people to only put up a single photo on the listing with others available to those who request them.

Frankly, your E-mail did not show any interest in the car at all and I'm wholly unsurprised that he responded with a reply that every bit as snotty as your initial E-mail.

Fleabag. However, since he's the one selling it he maybe would have been better off responding as if you'd phrased it like DrPizza mentioned above. On the other hand, he probably figures if you are that rude in the opening email, you probably aren't worth selling to anyway.

Yep.

And if he were to buy it, I have a feeling he'd be one of those people who would make a fuss when something went wrong a few months later and threaten to take the seller to civil court because it was advertised to run great.

If you're interested in a car and want to lowball him, find out about the car, (in a kind way, don't criticize the ad, you knothead) take enough cash to pay for it, stash $500-$1000 somewhere in your car/sock/up your ass, tell him that's all you have after looking at the car, if he's firm on the price, tell him you have to make an ATM run and pull the $ out of your ass/car/sock.

Ding-ding-ding! We have a winner!

Don't you think you're asking a bit much for your car? Also why aren't there more pictures of it and why doesn't it state if it's a DX or LX?

What you should have said:
"Hi, I have a couple questions about the car you have listed on Craigslist. Is this the LX or DX? Do you have any more pictures? Also, the price seems high to me; is the price negotiable? Thank you!"

I can't comment about the seller - I don't object to responding in kind.

QFT.

BTW, this would have been an epic thread if it had a poll.

that's a pic of a dx. side mirrors as well as the plastic strip on the doors aren't painted as well as side skirts aren't painted. those hub caps are from the previous generation civic. an lx would be painted, and an ex would come with a sunroof.

Holy shit! I didn't know there was also an aesthetic difference between the two cars!!! You wouldn't happen to know of a site that has a laundry list of differences that would be obvious between the various trims of civics would you? I want the LX civic because I don't want a sun/moon roof since it's heavier but do want Power Windows and Locks.

You know, I did notice something kind of like that on the '92-'95 civics, but I think it was just with the door handles.. So if the door handles are painted the color of the car, then it's probably an LX+ while if it has those black handles just as you described, then it's probably a DX? So for example, this is a '92-'95 DX civic:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F..._Honda_Civic_sedan.jpg

You're not going to notice a difference driving a car with a sunroof vs without.

fwiw assbag i wuldnt pay more than 500clams w any car with a quater million miles

I once pointed out to a seller on ebay that a GSXR front wheel he had for sale on ebay was actually using a picture of a rear wheel. I questioned him on it and he sent me a really nasty email. It's not as though you could easily confuse the two...not unless you didn't have a clue about what you were trying to sell anyway...which he clearly didn't.

Needless to say, I didn't bid on it.

In less time than this thread has taken, I sold my truck on craigslist by asking a fair price. And I do mean sold: posting ad, contacted by buyer, meeting buyer, showing car, taking money, transferring title, all done in less time than this thread has existed. Treat people with respect and things move along swimmingly.

Actually, the LX did not have painted door handles or rub strips. Do a quick google search for a 1996 Civic LX and look at the images.

If I remember correctly had a thread a while ago asking if he could take a craigslist poster to court if the car was different from what he saw in the ad.

Honestly, I just can't see a reason to pay that much for a car with that many miles no matter what name it has on it. Hondas (and Toyotas to a lesser extent) command such a massive premium in the used market and there's no way they are worth it. I've bought plenty of cars at $3k or less and you do much better looking for a car that's been well maintained rather than trying to get one specific model or brand that is supposedly the most reliable. $2.5k goes much farther when you're not fighting against people that believe the most abused car that has an 'H' on the front is better than everything else.

Yeah beware, because you know, wouldn't want a fraudulent seller getting entangled in a mess they created themselves.. I don't believe descriptions such as "runs good" are enforceable and all used car sales are *AS IS* but that doesn't mean one shouldn't be able to have recourse if their ad is deceptive and or they lied just to get you to come over to their place which leads to the point of false advertising. Dealerships can't do a bait and switch, but that doesn't mean they're liable if they sell you a POS car because all used car sales are as is, unless the dealership did something very deceptive like replacing the airbag module with a cover that makes it LOOK like an airbag, but isn't.
