This will be a site for most mom and pop types.

It won't be all flash and 'flashy' but my wife wants some...in Japan Flash is common....however I dont know about here.

Anyone in the biz know? I haven't coded in about 3 years.

flash is used only when you don't have any real content to put on a webpage or you want to make a really annoying ad.

I personally don't like Flash because it just gets annoying when you have to click through a intro movie or navigate some "l33t" interface designed in Flash. Nothing wrong with a well-designed page designed only with HTML/CSS/etc.

Flash is a relatively small and common download for users to get. You'd be hard pressed to find a popular site that doesn't in some way use flash.

However, using flash for an entire site is probably not good practice because of it's file sizes and load times. Flash, IMO, should only be used for multimedia elements, animations, and web presentations.

I hate flash sites. URLs and Fwd/Back get screwed up. Don't like sitting through animations. Bleh.

You are a tool. There are plenty of sites that use flash well. Just check out ESPN or the NFL sites.

I can't be the only one who removes Flash from their primary browser (anything I *need* to see in Flash I open in IE - and this is the only use IE gets)
Also - don't forget that flash is not considered accessible so you are limiting your reach in this respect too.

If a site is flash only I will just close it. I don't care how cute or cool your animation is, I don't want to watch it.

ok it seems AT readers are sometimes retarded ;)

I am not talking about animations and movies while you wait to be able to click.

I am talking using flash like the big sites do (disney, nike, etc)....

To deliver content and nice PC like menus and sound.

flash is for those companies who don't know what they are doing and have zero experience with the internet but think it looks neat. in my experience they don't always look that neat, and most always lead to user unfriendly sites. sites should present information and services in the fastest and most intuitive way possible, not animate some bullsh*t fixed resolution highly compressed cr@p on my screen.

even this page? 2advanced

If I wanted to design a flash page, I would definitely make an additional HTML page for the flash haters.

While I would have to give that designer(s) props for developing a cool flash, it totally sucks as a webpage. My CPU was maxed, it took forever to get to the main menu, and everything is tiny. I don't even want to imagine what it would feel like if I were surfing on a modem and a craptastic P200.

it's okay, but you should make sure that non-flash capable browsers can still navigate easily

Go for it. If implemented correctly, Flash can be great. Unfortunately when most people hear the word Flash they think of pop-up ads and lame ass intro animations.

I prefer the minimalistic approach. IMO the best use of Flash is when the user doesn't know that it is there.
